Odds slashed on Edin Dzeko to finish as Champions League top goalscorer

The Bosnian hitman has moved from 66/1 to 16/1 to clinch this season’s Golden Boot award

Odds have been cut on Roma striker Edin Dzeko finishing as the Champions League’s top goalscorer this season. Currently sat on five goals, the 32-year-old is just three goals behind Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, who leads the pack with eight goals to his name.

Dzeko is also just one goal behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the goalscoring charts, but does have an extremely favourable tie in the next round of the Champions League approaching, so will be given the perfect opportunity to build on his statistics.

Roma face Porto in the next round, which is a much easier challenge to the one Lewandowski faces when his side go up against Jurgen Klopp’s dominant Liverpool side next month.

Neymar (PSG), Paulo Dybala (Juventus), Dusan Tadic (Ajax) and Moussa Marega (Porto) all sit level on five goals alongside Dzeko at the moment, however with PSG facing Manchester United, Juventus facing Atletico Madrid and Ajax facing Real Madrid in the next round, the former Manchester City front man has – on paper – the best chance of getting on the scoresheet and progressing further in Europe’s most elite club competition.

The main challenge Dzeko faces is undoubtedly Lionel Messi, who seamlessly continues to improve as the years go by. The Argentinian has notched six goals so far and will most likely add to that when Barcelona face Lyon in the knockout stages in just under a month’s time.

Messi is currently favourite to finish the campaign as the Champions League’s top scorer, priced as short as 6/4 with some bookmakers, so unless you’re staking big there is little value in backing the 31-year-old playmaker.

One good bet could be backing Dzeko with an each way (E/W) bet. This means that should he finish in the top three, you will still make profit as the Bosnian’s odds are still relatively high. This gives you a little more leeway should he fail to score in one of his forthcoming Champions League ties, while still also giving you a good chance of winning a healthy amount if he finishes as the outright winner.

Bookmakers SkyBet & BetVictor are both paying three places if you back a top scorer with an each way bet.
