Odds slashed on Aitor Karanka to be next Huddersfield manager

Bookmakers have slashed the odds on Aitor Karanka becoming the next Huddersfield Town manager.

The Terriers are searching for a new boss after David Wagner parted company with the club by mutual consent earlier in the week. And Karanka has emerged as a surprise contender with his odds shifting from 20/1 just two days ago to 7/4 with one bookmaker, best priced at 21/10 with Betfair. That makes him the second favourite with most bookies with Borussia Dortmund II head coach Jan Siewert just ahead of him in the betting.

The Spaniard has only recently left Nottingham Forest after just a year in charge after apparently asking to be released from his contract at the City Ground. He was under pressure from the clubs owner, despite having them just four points adrift of the play-offs at the time of his departure.

This news comes after Sam Allardyce has already ruled himself out of the running despite having been the early favourite. Speaking to Sky Sports he said: “The difficulty for me, with Huddersfield particularly, is that no matter what magic I may be able to derive, they have not got enough goals to get them out of trouble.”

Mark Hudson is in temporary charge this weekend and has the daunting task of trying to get a result against the reigning champions Manchester City who have won their last three games in all competitions, scoring 19 goals in the process.

David Wagner left his position as Huddersfield Town manager by mutual consent earlier in the week.

Huddersfield currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League after 22 games, having won just two matches. They are already eight points adrift of safety and it is sure to be an extremely tough job for whoever arrives at the John Smiths Stadium to keep the Terriers in the top flight.

Wagner had done an incredible job just to get Town into the Premier League in the first place, taking them from a relegation dog fight in the his first season in charge to winning the play-offs a year later. He then managed to keep them up last season with a 16th place finish despite having the lowest budget of any Premier League side in history.
