Odds slashed on Karim Benzema joining Chelsea

With it being January the rumour mill is in overload at the moment with several high profile players being linked with clubs.

And the latest name rumoured to be on the move this month is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. The former France international’s odds to join Premier League outfit Chelsea have been slashed following a flurry of bets this weekend.

The 31-year-old was as high as 7/1 to join the Blues just a couple of days ago, but he now sits at 4/6 with Sky Bet to leave La Liga and arrive at Stamford Bridge this month. The drastic change can be put down to the fact that 71% of all bets on Benzema’s next club have been placed on Chelsea.

It appears that the team currently sat fourth in the Premier League will have little competition for his signature too, with the next best priced clubs to sign him being Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur (both 25/1).

It is no secret that Maurizio Sarri would like to recruit a striker with the two currently at the club, Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata, struggling for goals so far this season. It seems that Benzema could be one of the players on his wish list – whilst Edinson Cavani is also known to boast admirers in West London but is unlikely to be made available for transfer by Paris Saint Germain.

Callum Wilson is another striker who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. The AFC Bournemouth has been in great form this season, and is currently priced at 13/8 to make the move.

Alvaro Morata has struggled to make an impact at Chelsea since arriving in 2017.

Benzema has been at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2009 and has scored 204 times in 440 appearances for the Spanish giants. This season he has netted 12 goals in 28 appearances in all competitions, but his days at Real Madrid are numbered according to bookmakers who now make him 8/13 to leave in this transfer window, down from 6/1 just days ago. You can back him at 6/5 to stay in the Spanish capital.

Whilst he has not been as prolific in recent seasons as he has been in the past, there can be no doubting that Benzema is a goalscorer with a record of 285 goals in 608 career appearances. However, fans will argue that he is not really an improvement on what Chelsea have already got given his dip in form and that they should maybe wait for a younger, more in-form striker to become available.
