Paulo Dybala expected to replace Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid linked to Paulo Dybala as forward hints at Juve exit

It’s been a surprisingly lively week for European transfer rumours despite only the English domestic transfer window opening. Antoine Griezmann looks set to sign for Barcelona after officially announcing his intention to depart the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday evening, but with Atletico Madrid needing a big replacement to fill his shoes, Paulo Dybala has begun to fit the mould.

Known for playing in a variety of attacking roles for Juventus, Paulo Dybala has become one of the most exciting young players in Europe. It’s only been his consistency that’s let him down, scoring nineteen goals in his first term in Turin, dropping to eleven goals in his second, bouncing back with twenty-two in his third, but only achieving a measly five goals this time around.

Even though his record doesn’t always present him as the most prolific of players, he typically plays in as a second striker behind Cristiano Ronaldo, shining in recent times as the attacking midfielder that supported Gonzalo Higuain during his peak years at Juventus.

Quotes from Dybala’s brother and agent imply that the number 10 will leave the club this summer, with it being primarily down to Juventus now putting all of their eggs into one basket for Cristiano Ronaldo. Higuain previously stood out as Juventus’ most important player, but the team wasn’t focused exclusively on the former Napoli and Real Madrid striker, whereas players are reportedly furious with Massimiliano Allegri making his team entirely about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paulo Dybala now as short as 3/1 to sign for Atletico Madrid this summer

Following rumours of a massive deal being offered to Paulo Dybala, Atletico Madrid have fired their way up to 3/1 favourites to acquire his signature after previously not even featuring among the teams with a price. To make the situation even more dramatic, he was originally given the shortest price to sign for local derby rivals Real Madrid back when Santiago Solari hoped to be given enough time to build a team of his own at the Bernabeu.

Previously offering a price as short as 6/4 for Paulo Dybala to sign for Real Madrid, bookmakers are seeing some truth in the rumours which link the Argentine to Atletico Madrid, where he’d add to the list of successful players from Argentina including Sergio Aguero, Maxi Rodriguez, Nico Gaitan, Martin Demichelis, Ever Banega, and of course Atleti manager Diego Simeone.

The role Antoine Griezmann plays at Atletico Madrid doesn’t always see him as an out-and-out striker but, as the primary goalscorer for the club, Paulo Dybala would be expected to play in a forward role, and more importantly, he would need to be scoring in high numbers and on a regular basis. With this being the case, Atelti would be taking a risk in signing the forward, even if he often goes through bouts of presenting his technical ability and natural skill for finishing.

It seemed as if Paulo Dybala was happy by the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, but his performances have dipped since the world-class forward joined last summer.
