Peter Shilton criticises Wayne Rooney call-up

England’s record cap holder Peter Shilton has criticised the decision to hand Wayne Rooney a final 120th cap for his country in the upcoming friendly against USA.

Shilton earned 125 caps for his country between 1970-1990 and is the only man to have played more times for the Three Lions than Rooney, who hasn’t played for his country since Gareth Southgate took over.

However, it has been confirmed that the 33-year-old will play for England one last time against some of his MLS compatriots at Wembley in his farewell appearance for his country.

The game, which has been dubbed as the The Wayne Rooney Foundation International, will take place at Wembley Stadium on November 15. Despite the symbolic nature of the game Shilton believes now should a time where we focus on the youth, rather than recalling history.

He wrote on Twitter: “I don’t agree with giving Wayne Rooney a cap against USA, caps should be given on merit!

“Honour him by a presentation on the pitch and let the youngsters do the job!”
