Peterborough United owner proposes NFL style draft for EFL Clubs

Peterborough United owner Darren MacAnthony believes that clubs from League One and League Two should be afforded the chance to sign loan players from the Premier League in a draft system which replicates that of the NFL.

Each year the NFL allows teams to draft young players from college to come into their teams, with the worst teams in the league from the previous season picking first and the best choosing later on.

MacAnthony wants to replicate a version of that system for EFL clubs, believing it would provide both entertainment and benefits for all parties that are concerned.

“Can you imagine the entertainment every June?” the 42-year-old said.

“This show is filmed live, all 48 clubs go to Wembley – and the young players are there – they wait in a draft room until their number is called and then they’re presented.”

MacAnthony says it’s getting tougher by the year to sign players on loan from Premier League clubs, with all of Posh’s three loan players coming from sides in the Championship.

The Irishman wants there to be no financial agreement under the proposal, instead guaranteeing the Premier League club that their players will get an agreed percentage of game time in the first team.

“We went after a couple of Premier League loans in the summer and we were quoted £5,000 a week for a 52-week loan, when the season is only 40 odd weeks,” he said.

“Also we had to accommodate them, so it would end up costing us nearly £6,000 a week for a 19-year-old, from whatever club you might want to quote in the Premier League.

“I hate that and it just went against every bone in my body that we’d be paying all this money, when we’re going to have to develop someone else’s player.

“I’m happy to sit down with the EFL, or for them to read my Twitter feed, and take this forward.

“I’ve put it out there, I’ve started the conversation – let’s see if the powers that be have the intelligence to pick up on what I’m saying and run with it.”
