Premier League goalkeepers: PFA Team of the Year odds available

Which Premier League goalkeeper will be in the 2018/19 PFA Team of the Year?

As we head into the final stretch of the 2018/19 season, attention is starting to turn towards which players will be included in the PFA Team of the Year. The awards ceremony takes place in April and as usual most people are debating which attacking players will be included, whether it be Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah. However, one position that could prove competitive this season is which of the Premier League goalkeepers will be selected in the team.

In fairness, almost all of the goalkeepers in England’s top flight have produced excellent displays this season. Indeed he likes of Martin Dubravka at Newcastle United, Wolves stopper Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski of West Ham have all produced moments of magic to keep their respective sides in matches this term, whilst Neil Etheridge and Ben Foster have also impressed for Cardiff City and Watford respectively.

Bookmakers already have odds available for who will make the XI, but they only have three Premier League goalkeepers currently available on the market. We have taken a look at each of them, their odds and their potential chances of being included in the team.

Has Alisson been the best of the Premier League goalkeepers this season?

The favourite of the Premier League goalkeepers to be included in the PFA Team of the Year is currently Liverpool’s Alisson Becker. The Brazilian has been outstanding in his first season in English football having joined the Reds from AS Roma last summer and replaced Loris Karius between the sticks.

There was a lot of talk about his price tag when he arrived on Merseyside, with Liverpool forking out a whopping €62.5 million on him but you would have to say he has been worth every penny so far. Along with Virgil van Dijk he has offered a calming influence at the back which was much needed following some high profile blunders from both Karius and Simon Mignolet in recent seasons, leading to a much better defensive record for Liverpool.

Alisson has made 30 appearances so far in the league and has kept an astonishing 17 clean sheets, more than any other goalkeeper in the division. He has conceded just 17 times so far whilst also making 62 saves and has been a vital part of a team which has lost just one game and is firmly in the title race.

The 26-year-old has been so good that Paddy Power are currently offering odds of 2/5 to be the goalkeeper selected in the PFA Team of the Year.

David De Gea second best in Premier League goalkeepers category according to odds

Of all of the Premier League goalkeepers in recent years, there can be no doubting that David de Gea has been the most consistent. The Spaniard has been at Manchester United since the 2011/12 season and in that time has been crucial in the Red Devils winning a Premier League title, the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

With United having not been at their best since Sir Alex Ferguson left, they have often relied on De Gea’s sharp reflexes to keep them in matches and he has done so on a regular basis. Indeed it says everything that the 28-year-old has been the goalkeeper in the Team of the Year for the past four seasons, with Petr Cech in 2014 the last goalkeeper that wasn’t De Gea to be named.

That said, his form this season has not been quite as good as previous years which is perhaps why his odds to be included in the PFA Team of the Year are 7/2, quite a lot bigger than the odds for Alisson.

He has managed to keep just seven clean sheets this season, 10 fewer than Alisson, but it also has to be said that United’s defence is not at the same level as Liverpool’s. De Gea has managed to make 97 saves this season which is the third most in the league behind Lukasz Fabianski and Neil Etheridge, but again that could be attributed to the Red Devils weaker defence as they have allowed more shots on his goal.

Ederson’s odds suggest he will miss out

The third and final goalkeeper in with a chance of being named in the PFA Team of the Year according to bookmakers is Manchester City’s Ederson. The Brazilian has once again enjoyed a fine season in the Premier League, keeping 14 clean sheets in 30 appearances and conceding just 21 times as City look to secure back-to-back titles.

As well as his shot stopping, Ederson is also crucial to how Pep Guardiola wants his side to play. He is outstanding with the ball at his feet and could give plenty of the leagues midfielders a run for their money when it comes to passing, indeed he has played 761 passes this season and 100 accurate long passes.

He very much sets the tempo for City, playing out from the back and setting up their attacks, and he has even managed to claim an assist this season too which says everything about his ability on the ball.

Despite another very good season between the sticks at the Etihad, Paddy Power see him as the outsider when it comes to being selected as the best of the Premier League goalkeepers. Indeed he is currently priced at 7/1 to be in the PFA Team of the Year which seems harsh, we would argue that he has certainly had a better season than De Gea.

He has also arguably been the most consistent goalkeeper in the league and rarely makes a mistake, but he seems to have been overshadowed somewhat by the high figure arrivals of Alisson and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Ederson Manchester City

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes has enjoyed another extremely consistent season in the Premier League.
