Premier League Top Goalscorer Odds: Sadio Mane now 10/1

Premier League Top Goalscorer Odds: Sadio Mane now 10/1

Sadio Mane’s recent form has seen his odds to win the Golden Boot tumble

The form player in the Premier League right now is undoubtedly Liverpool winger Sadio Mane. The Senegal international has been scoring goals for fun recently, netting nine goals in his last nine league appearances whilst also hitting a brace against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Prior to that the 26-year-old had a pretty barren run in terms of goals, indeed before his last nine Premier League appearances he had scored just twice in 11 fixtures. During that time it was his fellow forward Mohamed Salah who was scoring the bulk of the Reds goals, but the roles have certainly reversed in the last couple of months and the former Southampton man has shouldered the goalscorer responsibility.

It means that Mane has now scored 17 league goals this season, putting him level with three other players and just one goal behind Sergio Aguero who is leading the way. That means that this is already his best goalscoring season in terms of league goals in his career, with his previous best being the 16 he managed for Red Bull Salzburg in the 2012/13 campaign.

As a result of Mane’s rich vein of form, the odds for him to finish as the Premier League’s top goalscorer have been cut dramatically in the last few weeks. When he scored the first of his last nine goals he was priced at 150/1 to win the Golden Boot with bet365 and by 9th February that had only dropped to 100/1.

Since then the odds have been steadily dropping, going to 80/1 in late February, then being halved to 40/1 before again being sliced into 20/1 ahead of Liverpool’s most recent fixture against Fulham. And after the Senegalese forward netted at Craven Cottage the odds were once again halved, meaning that he is now best priced at 10/1 to outscore everyone else in English football’s top flight.

Sergio Aguero still in pole position for Golden Boot

As mentioned, it is Sergio Aguero who leads the way in the race to finish as top goalscorer with 18 goals from his 26 appearances to date. The Argentinian international has been a regular threat in the Premier League for many years now, scoring 20 or more league goals in four of his previous six seasons for Manchester City.

He is performing at his best right now under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, with the likes of David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane amongst others all creating plenty of chances for him to score. He is doing so well that he has kept another top striker in Gabriel Jesus on the bench for the majority of the campaign.

The 30-year-old has won the Golden Boot award once before, in the 2014/15 season and the way he is currently playing with eight goals in his last seven appearances he looks a strong bet to win it for a second time. Indeed he is the clear favourite with the bookmakers as it stands, with Betfair offering the best odds of 13/8.

Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also in the race

Three other players can also count themselves in contention to win the Golden Boot award, the first of whom is Mane’s Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has 17 goals this season meaning he too is just one behind Aguero, but with him having seven assists to his name he would currently come out on top if they finished level.

Whilst he does have a good goals record this season, his performances have not quite lived up to the standards he set for himself last season. The 26-year-old was unbelievable in his first year at Anfield, netting 32 league goals in 36 appearances which actually ensured he won the Golden Boot. He is therefore looking to win it for a second season in a row, but he will need to improve on his recent form if he is to do so.

In his last eight league appearances he has managed just one goal which came against AFC Bournemouth on 9th February and he has looked a shadow of himself. His lack of form is reflected in the odds too, indeed he was made favourite to finish top goalscorer after Harry Kane’s injury in January and was even odds-on at 8/13 at one point, but he has now drifted to 10/3 with bet365.

Harry Kane is another player well in the mix, as he always is. The England striker has also scored 17 times in the Premier League this term and has been in good goalscoring form since returning from an ankle injury recently, netting three times in four appearances. Had he not missed four games through injury he may well have been at the top of the standings, but with just one goal currently separating himself and Aguero he will fancy his chances of winning the Golden Boot anyway.

Indeed Kane has won the award twice already in his career and has netted 20+ goals in each of the last four seasons, and looks likely to make that five this year. You can currently get odds of 7/2 for the England captain to win it which seems a big price given how close he is to Aguero’s tally.

Harry Kane is just one goal behind Sergio Aguero in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.

Finally you also cannot rule out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang either. The Arsenal front man has also scored 17 times this season and arguably has the easiest run-in of all the players on this list with the Gunners not playing any of the other ‘big six’ clubs in their remaining fixtures.

The one downside in backing the former Borussia Dortmund striker is the fact that he hasn’t been in the best form of late. He has managed to score just three times in his last nine appearances and has also found himself on the bench at times with manager Unai Emery opting to play Alexandre Lacazette instead. But with him still only being one goal behind it only takes one good game and he could jump to the top of the goalscorer standings, which means that odds of 13/2 look huge for the Gabonese to win the Golden Boot.
