Punter wins 24k from £20 bet after three sides bottle half-time lead

One lucky punter won just over £24,000 on Wednesday night after three sides threw away leads in the second-half of their matches.

The William Hill account holder, who’s identity will remain anonymous, stuck a £20 treble on Lyon, Rochdale & Benfica all to be leading their respective fixtures at half-time, but to not end the match as winners.

Portuguese giants Benfica took a 29-minute lead through Jonas Oliveira, before former Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic levelled things for the visitors just after the hour mark to ensure the game ended 1-1 and that leg of the selection was settled as a winner.

Elsewhere, Rochdale threw away a two-goal lead against Leicester City U21’s to see their match in the Football League Trophy finish 2-2 and go to penalties, where the the League One side eventually lost the match in the shootout 4-3.

Undoubtedly though, the luckiest selection came in the form of Lyon vs Hoffenheim in Champions League Group F. The Frenchmen saw themselves 2-0 up within the opening half hour at the Groupama Stadium, before a goal from Croatian front man Andrej Kramaric sparked an unlikely comeback from Hoffenheim, with Pavel Kaderabek netting in the 92nd minute to rescue a point for the Germans.

That goal right at the death meant that this lucky punter made an extremely healthy profit of £24,185 after staking £20 on this outlandish treble, leaving the bookies well and truly beaten.
