Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku has given Jose Mourinho a boost by returning to full training ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Manchester City.

Lukaku has been struggling with a muscle injury of late, which has brought a halt to what has been a frustrating few weeks for the Belgian, who has scored four goals in all competitions but is currently without one in his last nine appearances.

The 25-year-old was subsequently dropped for the visit of Everton at Old Trafford, coming on as a 65th minute substitute, before suffering a muscle injury that has him out of their recent victories over Bournemouth and Juventus.

United have won each of their last three without Lukaku in the starting XI, with some claiming their attack looks more fluid with the pace of Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford. Martial in particular has been in great form, scoring five goals in his last four appearances in the Premier League.

Mourinho told the gathered press: “Lukaku is training with the team this morning.

“If the answer is positive – and we have of course one more session tomorrow – he is ready. In this moment, I can only say that he trains with the team.”

Even if Lukaku is passed fit, he is expected to start only on the bench for United as they look to close the gap between themselves and City to just six points heading into the international break.

Lukaku has scored four goals in 12 appearances against Sunday’s opponents, but has failed to do so in a United shirt having drawn a blank in each of their two appearances last term in 180 minutes of action.
