Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves linked with summer transfer to Liverpool

Could Ruben Neves swap Wolves for Liverpool in the summer?

Liverpool could be set to test Wolves resolve in the summer by trying to sign star midfielder Ruben Neves.

The midfield is thought to be the main area which the Reds will look to improve in the next transfer window, and their assistant Pep Lijnders has added fuel to the fire. He admitted that the Portuguese would be the type of player that would be of interest to Liverpool in the next transfer window.

Neves has been at Wolves since 2017 and has been crucial to them in recent seasons. He was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year in the 2017/18 campaign as he helped Wolves win the title, and has continued his excellent form in the Premier League this year.

His impressive performances have predictably led to plenty of interest from ‘bigger’ clubs, and it appears that Liverpool could be one of those in the race to sign him.

Having worked with the 22-year-old during his time as a coach at Porto, Lijnders knows Neves well. Speaking with O Jogo about the player he said: “I know him very well, his ambition, his passion for the game, his professionalism. I know what he gives to the team and this type of player always interests us.”

As a result of the Dutchman appearing to declare interest in Neves, BetVictor have priced up a possible move to Anfield. The bookmaker are offering odds of 6/1 for the Portugal international to join the Merseyside club before 2nd September 2019.

Jurgen Klopp currently has the likes of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho and James Milner as their midfield options, but many have said that they lack some creativity in there. Neves would bring that albeit from a deeper role, he also has a tendency to score some spectacular goals and he is used to playing in a midfield three having played alongside Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho this season.

One thing is for sure and that is that he would command a much larger fee than the £15.8 million Wolves paid for him two years ago. He still has four years remaining on his current contract at Molineux, so Liverpool would need to pay a substantial amount to buy him.

Odds suggest Manchester City are favourites to sign Ruben Neves

Despite Liverpool’s apparent interest in Neves, they are not actually favourites to sign him with bookmakers. It is in fact Manchester City who lead the way in the market, with odds of 4/1 at BetVictor.

It is well documented that City’s main holding midfielder Fernandinho is now coming to the end of his career, with the Brazilian set to turn 34-years-old in May. Therefore they are beginning to look at potential replacements for him and Neves is one of the names that has been linked.

Pep Guardiola initially identified Jorginho as the man that he wanted to be the eventual successor to the Brazil international, and tried to sign the Italian last summer. However he instead opted to link up with former manager Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea and City didn’t pursue any other targets.

They will surely look to fill that void in the next transfer window though and having already scouted Neves last summer they may now look to make the move. They will surely have been impressed with the way he has adapted to life in the Premier League, especially when looking into his stats.

In January the Portuguese was averaging 5.62 interceptions per-match which was higher than Fernandinho’s 4.82. whilst he was just behind the Brazilian in terms of ball recoveries per game.

At just 22-years-old, Neves is at the perfect age for Guardiola to mould him into his system and improve him. He also already has 18 Champions League appearances under his belt from his time at Porto and is a full Portugal international so whilst he is young, he does already have experience in elite competition.
