Serie A leading goalscorer Krzysztof Piatek admits to using Fifa 19 to research his new teammates at Genoa

The striker is ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the goalscoring charts, but had no idea about his new colleagues upon joining Genoa in the summer

Genoa summer signing Krzysztof Piatek has admitted he used Fifa 19 to look up his new teammates at the Serie A club.

The Polish international, who arrived in Italy this summer from KS Cracovia in the Ekstraklasa league (Poland’s top-flight), has endured a dream start at his new club.

After scoring 9 goals in his opening 12 games this term (one more than Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has managed in the same number of league appearances), the 23-year-old currently sits top of the pile in the Serie A top goalscorer charts.

In a recent interview with Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, Piatek said that his success this season has come from being completely unknown.

“None of my teammates knew me,” he said. “I said to myself: ‘If they don’t know that I have scored 21 goals [for Cracovia last season] and scored in almost every game, maybe even the defenders will not know me.’ Being a stranger at the bottom has given me an advantage.”

The striker, who now has two senior caps for Poland, also explains that alongside his teammates and opponents not knowing who he was, he too did not know who they were, and had to learn more about their qualities by checking their stats on Fifa 19.

“I had no idea who my teammates at Genoa were when I signed, so I turned on my PlayStation and looked them up on FIFA.”

Although Piatek’s personal campaign has started brightly, the same can’t be said for his club. Genoa currently sit 14th in Serie A, just five points above the relegation zone and were thumped 5-0 by high-fliers Inter Milan in their last clash a week before the international break.

They host 12th placed Sampdoria this Sunday, where Piatek will be hoping to hit double figures to maintain his spot ahead of Ronaldo & Co. at the top of the league’s competitive goalscoring tally.
