Slavisa Jokanovic out, Claudio Ranieri in at Fulham

Premier League strugglers Fulham have sacked manager Slavisa Jokanovic and immediately replaced him with Claudio Ranieri.

The Serb leaves the London side just 12 games into the new Premier League season after guiding them to promotion from the Championship just six months ago in the play-off final victory over Aston Villa.

The club have wasted little time in finding his successor, immediately putting former Chelsea and Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri in his place. Ranieri has been out of work since the summer after leaving Ligue 1 club Nantes a year after joining the French outfit.

On the decision to change managers, chairman Shahid Khan said: “Making a change without having the right answer or succession plan was not an option.

“So having someone of Claudio’s calibre ready to accept our challenge was comforting but, most of all, essential.

“Claudio is risk-free and ready-made for the Premier League, and particularly so for what we need at this moment at Fulham.

“His recent body of work with Leicester City is literally legendary, and then you look at Claudio’s experience with Chelsea and big clubs throughout Europe, and it’s pretty evident we are welcoming an extraordinary football man to Fulham Football Club.”

Ranieri inherits a team that has just one Premier League victory to their name this season, whilst also having the worst defensive record, having conceded 31 goals to date – six more than any other team in the division.

Despite their lowly position in the table, Ranieri, who famously won the Premier League with Leicester in 2015/16, believes this Fulham team’s ceiling is much higher than to simply target finishing 17th or above.

“The objective at Fulham should never be to merely survive in the Premier League. We must at all times be a difficult opponent and should expect to succeed,” he added.

“This Fulham squad has exceptional talent that is contrary to its position in the table.

“I know this team is very capable of better performances, which we will work on straight away as we prepare for Southampton at the Cottage.”
