Three Championship clubs chasing Britt Assombalonga

Three Championship clubs chasing Britt Assombalonga

Middlesbrough are reportedly willing to allow Britt Assombalonga to leave the club on loan before the transfer deadline on Thursday.

The striker has fallen out of favour at the Riverside, starting just three of their last 13 matches in the Championship. Manager Tony Pulis has instead preferred to go with the powerful Jordan Hugill as his lone striker, leaving Assombalonga on the bench and struggling for minutes on the pitch.

It is thought that there would be no shortage of takers for the 26-year-old though, with a host of Championship clubs interested in securing his services.

Sky Sports News have already reported that Blackburn Rovers are keen on signing the striker on loan, with Tony Mowbray desperate to bolster his attacking options. The stumbling block here could be his wages, with the player on a hefty salary at the Riverside and Rovers could fall short of the percentage Middlesbrough want for him.

Meanwhile Aston Villa have also been linked with a permanent move for him which could have legs given they are set to allow Scott Hogan to join Sheffield United. Bristol City are the other club thought to be interested in signing the DR Congo international, with the Bristol Post reporting that they could make an audacious bid to land him.

It is thought that whilst Boro would prefer a loan, they would be open to selling the player but only if they recoup most of the £15 million fee they paid for him.

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has preferred to use Jordan Hugill over Britt Assombalonga this season.

Despite not being a regular in the side, Assombalonga has still managed to net seven times in the league this season and a further two in cup competition which actually makes him Boro’s top goalscorer.

He joined the Teeside club from Nottingham Forest for a club record fee back in the summer of 2017 and netted 15 times in his first season at the club. He has been a regular goalscorer throughout his career, hitting double figures for Southend United in League Two, Peterborough United and Forest in the Championship.

As well as interest from the Championship there are also rumours that a couple of Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation, with Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion said to be keen.
