Didier Drogba has now officially called time on his professional career after making his final appearance for Phoenix Rising in the USL.

Drogba, 40, has been superb for Phoenix in the USL – the club which he also part-owns – and was vital in the team’s run to the USL Cup Final before suffering defeat against back-to-back champions Louisville City.

He has now called time on a professional career which lasted 20 years and included spells in Europe with the likes of Guingamp, Marseille and Galatasaray. However, it is Chelsea where he will be remembered most fondly, having scored 164 goals in 381 appearances across two spells at Stamford Bridge.

During his time with the London club, Drogba won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League and is responsible for the most iconic moment in the club’s history when scoring the winning penalty against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

On the subject of retiring, Drogba previously said: “It’s really a pleasure for me to play. I started late at the top level. I really enjoy playing. I like my role of owner-player a lot.

“I’m surrounded by a lot of youngsters, and I like passing my know-how on to them. But this season is the last. I’m 40, it’s time now.”
