Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is never too far from controversy, and last night he grabbed all the headlines as Los Blancos thrashed Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in the Champions League.

The 32-year-old defender, who has made over 400 appearances for the La Liga giants since joining the club from Sevilla in 2005, appeared to deliberately elbow Plzen’s Milan Havel in the face when the game was just 14 minutes old.

Both players were running towards the ball, before Ramos cut Havel off, using his body to stop the Plzen midfielder in his tracks. Nothing wrong with that, it’s common practice in football and Ramos is one of the best in the world when it comes to using his dominating physique to win back possession for his team.

The problem is that Ramos appeared to intentionally thrust his elbow into the face of his opponent, in turn completely busting his nose. Medics immediately rushed to the 24-year-old’s attention and Havel had to be substituted just 20 minutes later as it was clear he was in some discomfort from the injury.

This morning, Ramos has tweeted, saying:

“A victory to build on and also to learn from. Football always teaches you things and tonight I shouldn’t have gone into the challenge like that. Milan, it wasn’t my intention to injure you. Get well #HalaMadrid”

Real Madrid have now made it three wins from three after sacking Julen Lopetegui last week; last night’s resounding victory means that they now sit top of their Champions League Group, level on points with second-placed AS Roma.

They travel to 11th place Celta Vigo in La Liga this Sunday, looking to close the mammoth seven point gap on current leaders Barcelona.
