WATCH: Southend’s Charlie Kelman scores incredible goal from own half

Southend United midfielder Charlie Kelman scored the goal of the day in the English Football League yesterday in their League One fixture against Plymouth Argyle.

The Shrimpers, currently laying in 12th place in the third tier, had  been enduring a difficult day at the office and with just 17 minutes left to play found themselves 3-0 down to the struggling Pilgrims.

But a penalty netted by Simon Cox gave them some hope and at 3-1 it was game back on. Kelman had been thrown on just a couple of minutes before the penalty, with the 17-year-old making his debut. The youngster is tipped to have a big future by staff at Southend and it is easy to see why as he marked his first appearance for the club with a wonder goal from his own half in injury time.

The ball fell to him inside his own half after his teammate had won it from a Plymouth striker and he turned and headed towards the halfway line. Just as he reached the centre circle however, he decided that instead of running with the ball, or trying to pick out a pass that he would try an audacious attempt at goal. He must have seen something because his strike flew into the back of the net, catching Pilgrims stopper Kyle Letheren out. The Welshman tried to back-pedal but was off balance and could do nothing to stop the ball from bouncing past him and into the net.

What a way to mark your first team debut.
