Bayern Munich have "opened talks" with Manchester City as they look to sign winger Leroy Sane in the summer transfer window, that is according to reports.
The winger has been at the Etihad since 2016 after joining from Schalke 04 for an initial fee of £37 million. During his time with the club he has helped them win two Premier League titles, two League Cup's and could be involved in their FA Cup final clash against Watford.
It would be fair to say that he has been a success for the Citizens, indeed he has scored 14 goals and racked up 12 assists this season alone from a wide position.
But despite this, he has not been a regular starter for Pep Guardiola in the last few months of the season. Indeed he started just five of City's last 14 Premier league fixtures and was also left on the bench for both legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Tottenham.
It is believed that Guardiola doesn't fully trust him in his starting 11, especially in the big games, largely due to his work rate. This is why he has instead opted to play Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and even Riyad Mahrez at times ahead of him.
The Daily Record has said that Sane has "rejected a series of offers to upgrade and extend a contract" and that he is "unhappy with his status" in Guardiola's squad. A move to Bayern therefore, which would mean going back to his home country of Germany and almost certainly a regular starting berth, could well appeal to the 23-year-old.
Despite the reports, Sane is still yet to go odds-on with the bookmakers to join the Bundesliga outfit. BetVictor are currently offering a price of 2/1 for him to make the move, with Sky Bet's odds slightly longer at 3/1. But as the rumours gather momentum, those prices could soon be set to change.
Bayern Munich set for summer squad overhaul
Sane could be one of a whole host of new faces arriving at the Allianz Arena in the summer transfer window, with Bayern set for a squad overhaul.
It is common knowledge that they have a lot of ageing players within their ranks and having failed to go beyond the round of 16 in the Champions League this term they believe that now is the time to shake things up a bit.
The club have already forked out €115 million to bring in French World Cup hero Benjamin Pavard from VfB Stuttgart and Atletico Madrid's Lucas Hernandez to revamp their options at the back. They have also been linked with a move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka of Crystal Palace on top of that.
But their attack also needs improving, especially with experienced campaigners Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben leaving this summer whilst James Rodriguez loan deal will also expire.
Lille's Nicolas Pepe was thought to be high up on their list of targets after netting 20 goals from the wing this season, whilst Ajax star Hakim Ziyech is also thought to be of interest to the Bavarians.
But it could be now that Sane has overtaken both as the clubs number one target, so it will be interesting to see whether or not City are willing to sell him. He has undoubted potential to be a top player, but with him having not featured as much as he would like recently, now may the time they cash in on the young German.
