While being on loan at Roma, Manchester United’s Chris Smalling made a huge impression with 27 appearances for the Giallorossi, scoring three times and helping them to finish fifth in Serie A.

Roma, therefore, has expressed their desire to keep Smalling on and have reportedly placed bid for the Englishman which United have rejected. As things stand, Smalling will return to Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a very positive year for the defender, however, Roma remain the clear favourites for his next permanent club.

The Italian side have been struggling to get the money together which United have demanded for the 30-year-old defender, and this seems to be the only major roadblock. However, with American billionaire Dan Friedkin’s takeover of Roma, there might be more cash to throw at United.

Inter Milan have made Manchester United’s Chris Smalling one of their main targets this summer transfer window as Antonio Conte looks to take on board another Premier League man. Since joining Inter, Conte has taken Ashley Young, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku from United and Smalling may well be the next.

The former Chelsea boss was originally interested in Torino defender, Armando Izzo, but according to multiple sources, the interest has been cooled so he can pursue Smalling. Inter's dealings with the likes Sanchez from United have seemingly formed a good relationship with the two clubs, which could earn them Smalling, if Conte plays his cards right.

Though the Milan side come in as second favourite to signing the United defender, they remain both a logical and likely option for Smalling, given how the Inter boss just loves to recruit Premier League stars.

With Roma reportedly unwillingly to £20m United’s desire for Chris Smalling, the Reds Devils have reportedly listened to offers from fellow Premier League outfits. Newcastle United are the frontrunners in this regard and despite the takeover all but over, the Magpies still need to spend wisely.

Without the Saudi-backed consortium, it remains unclear whether Newcastle could come up with the cash during these financially trying times, as their budget has already been exceptionally low.

Though the English defender would love to stay at Roma, he would consider other clubs if the right asking price and contract come along. However, a move to Newcastle looks a step too far, as it's doubtful they will match United's asking price, as well as Smalling's salary demands.
