Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United contract finishes in the summer of 2023, and so, with just a year now left on his contract and rumours circulating that he could leave the club this summer, some of Europe's top clubs could be looking to make a move for the Portuguese forward when the transfer window opens.

Ronaldo's return to the club where he made his name as one of the best players in the world has not gone as well as the forward would have liked it to, with United being knocked out of all domestic cup competitions, beaten by the likes of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and failing to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

His astronomical wages are also an issue for United, as is the mixed reports that United's new manager Erik ten Hag reportedly does not see Ronaldo in his plans for United next season. All of these reasons could contribute to Ronaldo leaving just a year into his much-heralded return to Manchester.

Here, we take a look at the clubs whom he could be playing for come next season.

Few teams in world football can afford Ronaldo's high wage demands, but PSG are one side that can. And with departures in the forwards department likely for Les Parisiens, a move for Ronaldo makes sense.

Lionel Messi has managed to score only 9 nine times since he joined the club, an extremely underwhelming figure for the Argentine. It was widely expected that Messi would run riot in a league that is constantly derided for its purported lack of defensive ability and one-team dominance, but he hasn’t. So, with this poor form coupled with Messi’s contract expiring in a year, could PSG cut their losses and let Messi leave this summer?

In addition to this, Kylian Mbappe's contract expires in just two months, and he looks unlikely to renew his deal amid heavy interest from Real Madrid. It's a deal that is likely to transpire, and so if he were to depart, a gap would arise in the frontline that Ronaldo could fill.

Another forward that could leave this summer is Angel Di Maria, with his deal running out at the same time as Mbappe’s. With the status of so many of PSG's forwards uncertain, the club could decide to make a move for the Portuguese attacker to replace Mbappe, Di Maria or Messi.

The opportunity to add to his trophy haul is a certainty for Ronaldo if he were to join PSG, and he would also be playing Champions League football.

Could Real Madrid make a move for the player that they let leave back in 2018? Ronaldo is still, at 37 years of age, a reliable goalscorer and with the future of some of Madrid’s frontline uncertain, Florentino Perez may look to try and tempt Ronaldo back to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid needs fresh faces in their attack. Gareth Bale's time in Madrid has been turbulent to say the least, with fans and members of the squad not fond of the former Tottenham star. So, with his contract up in June, Bale’s agent has confirmed that the Welshman will be leaving in the summer.

Eden Hazard has also failed to impress since leaving Chelsea for Los Blancos, with injuries and inconsistent form hampering his progress. The Belgian has scored just six goals in 60 appearances during his time at the club, and just one this entire season.

In stark contrast, Ronaldo has managed to score 18 in the Premier League. And it's not just Hazard and Bale who have been poor this season - strikers Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz have just one goal between the two of them this season. So, with the poor form of some players and others likely to depart, could Madrid look to make a move for Ronaldo?

Could Ronaldo make a shock return to the club where he spent his formative years?

Without doubt, Ronaldo would be the best player at Sporting and arguably the best in the Primeira Liga if he were to return to his homeland.

A move back to Lisbon would also represent a challenge for Ronaldo – he has won league titles everywhere he has played, but never with Sporting. The only silverware that the 37-year-old lifted during his time at the Portuguese club was the Taça de Portugal – so a player who is known for challenging himself to achieve as much as is possible would surely relish the chance to help his boyhood club lift Portuguese football’s top prize before he retires.

Sporting have won just three league titles since 2000, being crowned champions in 2000, 2002 and 2021. The Leões have struggled for sustained success, but the signing of Ronaldo could propel them back to glory.

Ronaldo has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, with 18 of those coming in the Premier League – he is still a capable goalscorer, and so would definitely be able to continue his goalscoring exploits to the relatively-easier Portuguese division. His tally in the Premier League is more than any of Sporting's forwards this season.

Therefore, Ronaldo’s goals would be of a big help to Sporting, who do not possess the forwards that title rivals Benfica and Porto have. Indeed, Sporting's top scorer this season, Pablo Sarabia with 17, is not even their own player - he is on loan from PSG.

Striker Paulinho and winger Pedro Goncalves have both bagged 14 goals in all competitions. Sporting's other forwards have all scored 10 or less goals - Nuno Santos has 10, Jovane Cabral has three, Marcus Edwards has two and Bruno Tabata has four. Combined, all those players have scored 19 goals in all competitions - Ronaldo has 24.

Bayern Munich could see two of their star players leave this year, with Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry both linked with moves away from the Bavarian side.

Ronaldo would be a good replacement for either of these two players, as he would be a good replacement for the Poles' goals, and Gnabry's skill and ability to beat his man.

Winger Serge Gnabry has put up impressive figures once again this season, but reports have linked him with moves away to several of Europe's top clubs, with the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus all registering interest in the German who is reportedly unsettled in Munich.

With just a year left on Gnabry’s contract, Bayern may decide to cash in on him rather than lose him for free this summer – and Ronaldo would be a good replacement for the German.

The club also find themselves in a similar predicament with talisman Lewandowski, whose contract also runs out next summer. The striker has been linked with a move away from Bayern, with the likes of PSG, Barcelona, Arsenal and the Manchester clubs all interested in the Pole.

According to most reports, Lewandowski sees himself playing at the Camp Nou in the future. So, with their main source of goals likely to leave, Bayern may decide to make a similar signing to Lewandowski in Ronaldo, who can still score plenty of goals and would relish playing against porous Bundesliga defences.

A move to Bavaria for Ronaldo can't be ruled out, with the current odds at 14/1.
