Fulham favourites to sign Dwight Gayle according to bookmakers

Where will Dwight Gayle transfer to this summer?

It looks set to be a big summer for Dwight Gayle, who seems likely to leave Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old striker has just enjoyed another strong season in the Championship, scoring 24 goals in 40 appearances whilst on loan at West Brom. He joined the Baggies as part of a deal which saw Salomon Rondon move in the opposite direction to Newcastle on loan, and most assumed that if they were successful the two players would make those moves permanent this summer.

However, because West Brom failed to gain promotion to the Premier League they will not be moving to sign Gayle as they cannot afford to pay his £55,000-a-week wages.

Speaking after the season finished, Albion's technical director Luke Dowling said: "Dwight's contract is a Premier League contract. We will pay Premier League contracts but only when we are back in the Premier League.

"I know it won't be the news Albion fans want to hear, but they need to trust us and know we are doing everything right for this football club."

Gayle doesn't look to have a future with Newcastle either, with Rafa Benitez believed to be keen to offload him as they look to improve their squad this summer. That means that the former Crystal Palace man is available for transfer this summer, and there are likely to be plenty of clubs considering trying to bring him in.

We have taken a look at the bookmakers odds to see where they are predicting Gayle's future lies.

Fulham favourites to secure Dwight Gayle transfer

According to the bookmakers odds, Fulham is Gayle's most likely destination this summer. The Cottagers have been made 3/1 favourites to secure his signature with Sky Bet, as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for an instant return to the Premier League.

The Cottagers were relegated from the top flight last season and new manager Scott Parker wants to get rid of some of their underperforming players and bring in some solid Championship experience.

With them almost certain to lose Aleksandar Mitrovic, who was one of few to impress last season by hitting double figures, it leaves them in need of a striker. And with the Serbian set to bring in a decent fee, they should have the funds to go out and buy Gayle to replace him unlike West Brom.

Fulham are predicted to be one of the main promotion contenders next season, and signing Gayle would further cement that view. In his last three campaigns in the Championship he has scored a combined 59 goals for Peterborough, Newcastle and West Brom which highlights just how prolific he is in the second tier. And playing in a Fulham team which was well known for quality attacking play when they were last in the Championship two years ago, he is bound to get plenty of goalscoring opportunities.

Other potential transfer destinations for Dwight Gayle

Looking further down the market, both Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds United could be in with a chance of signing Gayle according to bookies with them being joint second favourites to sign him at 5/1.

A move to Leeds would be somewhat surprising, given that like West Brom they will be playing in the Championship next season without the same parachute payments that Fulham will have. Their chairman Andrea Radrizzani has admitted that they cannot spend huge sums of money this summer so paying £15 million plus for Gayle doesn't look likely at this point.

Whether they could agree a loan deal with subsidised wages is unclear, but it seems like Newcastle would rather sell the player this summer than allow him to go on loan for a second season.

As for Brighton, they could afford to buy him as they are in the Premier League and are likely to be in the market for a centre forward. Glenn Murray scored 13 goals last season in the Premier League but will turn 36-years-old in September, whilst their other strikers all failed to impress with Florin Andone only getting three and Jurgen Locadia managing two whilst record signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh didn't score at all.

Norwich City and Stoke City are both priced at 6/1 to sign Gayle this summer, Sheffield United are 8/1 whilst a move to either of Derby County or Nottingham Forest is 10/1.
