This summer could see Helder Costa leave Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to reports.
The Portuguese international has been at Molineux since arriving on loan in July 2016. He was the first major signing after the Fosun International Group took over and then became the clubs record signing at the time when they paid Benfica £13 million for his services in 2017.
He played a big part in Wolves' promotion from the Championship a couple of years ago, and began as a regular upon their return to the Premier League. But following Nuno Espirito Santo's decision to switch from a 3-4-3 formation to a 3-5-2, he has struggled for game time in the second half of the campaign.
And as they look to strengthen their squad this summer ahead of Premier League and Europa League campaigns in 2019/20, Costa could be moved on to make room for new arrivals. He may not be the only one either, with his compatriot Ivan Cavaleiro also thought to be available for transfer.
Costa is thought to have already attracted plenty of interest with both Fulham and Huddersfield Town having been linked with him. But it looks as though Leeds United are in pole position to sign the winger.
Leeds odds-on to secure Helder Costa transfer
According to the bookmakers if Costa does leave Wolves this summer, he may drop back into the Championship to play for Leeds United.
Sky Bet are offering odds of 8/11 for the 25-year-old to join the Elland Road outfit following links made by local press in West Yorkshire.
It is no secret that Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta will be looking to strengthen in the wide areas this summer. They are lacking in that position with Jack Harrison's loan spell having ended, and they see a player of Costa's quality as an ideal addition as they look to challenge for promotion for a second successive season.
As already mentioned he was a key cog in Wolves' promotion from the Championship, and he could do the same for Leeds under Bielsa. He is a creative player, registering an average of 0.3 assists per game in the 2017/18 season which ranked him fourth of all wingers playing in the second tier that year. Adding him to their ranks could take some of the strain away from Pablo Hernandez, who shoulders most of their creative responsibility at the moment.
The one stumbling block could be how much Wolves would want for the player. They paid a big fee to take him to Molineux and with him still only being 25, they are likely to want to recoup a large amount of that with a sale.
Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani has already hinted that they will not be spending big this summer, and will instead look to utilise the loan market. With that in mind, it therefore looks unlikely that the Whites will buy Costa this summer, so any potential deal may have to be a loan - perhaps with an option to buy if he helps guide them into the Premier League.
