Since returning to Old Trafford back in 2016, Paul Pogba has endured a interesting spell at Manchester United to say the least.
The Frenchman, who cost the Red Devils a then world record fee of £89 million, was supposed to be a game changing signing for United. They had just endured a disappointing campaign in the Premier League, finishing in fifth place under Louis van Gaal and playing a brand of football that most thought was extremely dull and boring to watch.
He came in at the same time as Jose Mourinho and they were expected to get Manchester United back up towards the levels of the Sir Alex Ferguson era. But other than a few good performances here and there, Pogba has failed to really perform for the club and after falling out with Mourinho he was dropped to the bench before the Portuguese was sacked.
Upon the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the world cup winner's performances began to improve and he scored eight goals and racked up six assists in the Norwegian's first nine games in charge. His surge in form didn't last for long however, and in his last 12 league appearances of the season he scored just two goals, both from the penalty spot, and managed just one assist.
As a result of Pogba's poor finish to the campaign, there have been plenty of rumours about his future. It is a huge summer for United who look set for a major overhaul to get rid of some of their underperforming players, some of whom appear to have the wrong attitude to play for the club.
Pogba could certainly be one of the players in question and the latest rumour is that he could be set for a return to Juventus, with reports in Italy suggesting talks have already begun over a potential deal between the two clubs and his agent Mino Raiola.
Back in April a move to Juventus was priced way out at 14/1, but that has been shortening ever since and Sky Bet are now offering odds as short as 3/1 for him to move back to Turin. United are thought to want more than the £89 million that they paid for him three years ago, but Juventus are keen to make a major signing this summer so the fee may not matter to them.
Things are certainly changing at the Old Lady, Max Allegri has already left and looks set to be replaced by Maurizio Sarri and they seem keen to sign new players in a bid to do better in the Champions League, with Jorginho another who has been linked recently.
Pogba was superb during his first spell with Juventus, helping them to four league titles and a European final. It would therefore make sense for him to return to a club where he has played his best football, leaving behind one where more often than not he has struggled to make any real impact.
Real Madrid still favourites to secure Paul Pogba transfer
Despite the links with Juventus, it is Real Madrid who remain the odds-on favourites to secure Pogba's signature in this transfer window. Sky Bet are offering odds of 4/6 for the French international to move to the Santiago Bernabeu, with Los Blancos looking to re-mould their squad after a disastrous 2018/19 campaign.
Zinedine Zidane has reportedly identified his compatriot as a key target alongside Eden Hazard this summer, and Pogba himself has made no secret of his admiration for the club and their manager.
There are rumours that Madrid could offer the likes of Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Keylor Navas as part of any potential deal with the Red Devils, with president Florentino Perez keen to offload at least one of their big earner who are surplus to requirements and avoid paying just a transfer fee.
Bale appears the most likely of the three to be involved in any transfer, with the Zidane having openly admitted that the Welshman is not part of his future plans. Having previously been a target of Ed Woodward's, the former Spurs man definitely boasts admirers at Old Trafford and United have been the favourites to sign him for a few months now.
There is no doubting that the La Liga giants have the funds to sign Pogba, this could potentially be a move that suits all parties with Madrid getting a high profile player, whilst United recoup the money they paid for him and possibly acquiring another world-class player in the process.
