Philippe Coutinho's troublesome price tag

Phillipe Coutinho was once hailed as one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents, stunning the league with his magical assists and phenomenal goals for Liverpool.

However, since leaving the Reds for Barcelona in a deal worth £142 million, the Brazilian has struggled to find the form he displayed during his time at Anfield, leading Coutinho to a loan spell with Bayern Munich and ultimately proving a waste of such an expensive spend.

Munich are seemingly not going to pay the £105 million option-to-buy fee when his loan deal at the Allianz Arena expires at the end of the season, and with the amount of competition at Barcelona for positions, it is likely Coutinho will seek a permanent move elsewhere.

Despite not living up to his potential since departing Merseyside in 2018, it seems plenty of clubs still believe the former Liverpool man can be of use, with many managers reportedly in the hunt for his signature.

Here, we take a look at the Paddy Power odds for Phillipe Coutinho’s potential transfer options.

Coutinho Spurs Odds

Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped as the favourites to sign Coutinho, with Paddy Power pricing the odds for a move to the club at 4/1. Interestingly, Spurs showed interest in Coutinho last season already, although the deal fell through due to his heavy price tag, which Daniel Levy had refused to pay.

With reports now claiming Barcelona are willing to drop his transfer fee in order to offload the midfielder for around £70 million, Levy’s head could be turned to the deal once more.

Spurs fans will also be happy to hear that Kia Joorabchian, Coutinho’s agent, has said the Brazilian does not hold any grudges towards Spurs despite the deal initially falling through after personal terms were agreed last summer.

Also, after recent speculation that Harry Kane may seek a move away from Tottenham to chase his dream of winning silverware, Spurs may be looking for a new talisman and have quite the budget to do so.

Jose Mourinho could have the option of playing South Korean forward, Son Heung-min, in a central role more permanently, should Kane depart. This would leave the wide position open, making Coutinho a viable option to potentially replace the England star.

The former Liverpool man could also be a possible replacement for Christian Eriksen, after the Dane swapped north London for Inter Milan this season. Spurs have lacked the creative style Eriksen brought them since he has gone, and Coutinho could be the signing to bring that creativeness back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Coutinho Liverpool odds

Liverpool are Paddy Power’s runner-up favourites to re-sign their former number 10 at odds of 5/1. At the time, the loss of Coutinho was deeply worrying for Liverpool and their fans, as he was often a saviour for the Reds in a time of desperation. These days seem like a shadow now with their current record-breaking form, but they may still want to bring the Brazilian back, considering he is only 27 and clearly turns it on in Liverpool colours.

Coutinho had talismanic status at Anfield, making him a fan favourite. Despite leaving Liverpool, the Anfield faithful don’t seem to hold any grudges against him, and surely many fans would welcome their former hero back to the club.

No doubt Jurgen Klopp will look to build on their already formidable squad, so they can continue to dominate just like Manchester City have done recently. The club may struggle to keep hold of star names like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, so keeping an eye out for talent is always going to give Klopp sleepless nights.

At the same time, Liverpool's budget has no doubt increased, with the club earning a windfall from their Champions League triumph and soon, surely, from the Premier League.

At odds at 5/1, this is our tip for Coutinho's next club.

Coutinho Chelsea odds

Chelsea have also featured in reports involving the transfer of Coutinho, prompting Paddy Power to give them very good odds of 6/1. The most recent transfer news involving Coutinho would suggest he is closest to a move to Frank Lampard's Chelsea, with reports claiming he is due to reject a move elsewhere in favour of a move to west London.

Since the transfer of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, Chelsea have lost a key attacking element that the Belgian brought to Stamford Bridge. The transfer of Coutinho could be the Blues' answer to the loss of Hazard and Chelsea’s creative issues, potentially putting them back into title contention.

Lampard will no doubt be looking to bolster his side when he gets the chance, with the club now free from their transfer ban. Last summer, whilst rivals were strengthening, Chelsea had no choice but to prioritise their youth for success with the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount - very much against the usual blueprint of Chelsea success.

With the club now free to buy, Roman Abramovich will most likely give Lampard a much higher budget than previous managers like Antonio Conte had. Whilst the likes of Mount are doing well, the Abramovich will surely want to see the club bring in stars like Coutinho instead, to get them back up there with City and Liverpool.

For this reason, 6/1 is a great shout.

Coutinho Leicester City Odds

As the outside favourites, Leicester City, have been the most surprising contender for the Brazilian's signature this summer, with odds of 7/1.

Since shocking everyone and winning the Premier League in the 2015/16, Leicester have seemingly failed to build on their title-winning formula. By selling the likes of Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante, they have lost the players key to their former success.

Recently, however, the Foxes have been performing well under Brendan Rodgers, potentially earning themselves a place in the Champions League again next season. The lure of Europe’s top competition could allow for the likes of Coutinho to consider a move to the King Power Stadium next season and it may also give the club a budget to do so.

Additionally, a reunion with his former manager and mentor could mean Leicester may be the perfect move for the Brazil star to rebuild his career, and with a striker like Jamie Vardy at the head of Rodgers’ attack, Coutinho could be tempted to complete this shock move.

The 7/1 outside odds are high, but certainly worth considering because of the Rogers-Coutinho link.
