It has been announced that Gianluigi Buffon will leave Paris Saint Germain this summer, with his contract set to expire.
The Italian goalkeeper has only been in the French capital for one season after joining from Juventus in July 2018. He made 25 appearances in total for the Parisians, including five in the Champions League.
He leaves with another two winners medals to his name though after helping PSG to a sixth Ligue 1 title in seven seasons, whilst also winning the Trophee des Champions.
In an official statement put on his Instagram page discussing his departure, Buffon said: "I leave happy to have enjoyed this experience which has undoubtedly helped me to grow. Today my adventure outside Italy comes to an end."
He also put a separate message on PSG's official club website in which he said: “I would like to thank the chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the whole club and my teammates. I wish you all the best, convinced that together you will write the pages of a wonderful story.
"Ernest Hemingway wrote that there are only two places in the world where people can live happily: at home and in Paris. Today onwards, this will also apply to me: Paris, in some way, will always remain my home... Allez Paris!"
Buffon's departure could open the door for a new number one to arrive at the Parc des Princes, with David de Gea one of the names linked with the club. Alphonse Areola is now their only recognised senior goalkeeper, so there is definitely space for someone to come in.
The big question now is where will the former Italian international stopper go next? There is likely to be plenty of offers for his services despite being in the twilight of his career, we have taken a look at the odds to see where he could end up for the 2019/20 season.
Parma favourites to secure Gianluigi Buffon transfer
According to bookmakers, Buffon's most likely destination for next season is Parma. The 41-year-old of course started his career with the club and played for them between 1995-2001, making 220 appearances in his time at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.
It does seem as though the legendary goalkeeper wants to return back home to Italy. He reportedly wants to be closer to his family and has according to Calciomercato has already rejected offers from clubs in the Chinese Super League and MLS.
Obviously Parma cannot afford to offer the player anywhere near the same kind of salary that he was on at PSG, but with this now the swan song of his career money shouldn't be too much of an issue. He also has a deep rooted love for the club, which means that if they do offer him the chance to end his career there he could choose to take it whatever the wage packet is.
Sky Bet are offering odds of 6/4 for Buffon to join Parma this summer.
They have also priced up a return to Juventus, which seems a little less likely. The Old Lady have moved on since his departure last year, Wojciech Szczęsny enjoyed a strong season between the sticks and doesn't need replacing.
Buffon is unlikely to want to spend a season as back-up goalkeeper, but despite this odds of 2/1 are available for him to move back to Turin.
