League One Round-Up: 25/08/2018

League One Round-Up: 25/08/2018

The fifth round of League One matches begin on Saturday afternoon, with all 12 fixtures kicking off at 3pm. The third tier will really begin to take shape come Saturday evening and plenty of teams will be keen to soar up the table with another three points in the bag. Here is a run-down of all 12 ties, complete with a betting tip for each.

AFC Wimbledon vs Sunderland

Our first game of the round-up comes at KingsMeadow, as AFC Wimbledon host high-flying Sunderland. The home side sit in mid-table and have had an average start to the season, where they’ve picked up five points. Neal Ardley’s side will be keen on bettering last season’s finish with a solid finish in League One this year and that can be kick-started by picking up points against the Black Cats. Jack Ross’ side have picked up 10 points in the division they haven’t played in for 30 years and currently remain unbeaten in the league. The Scottish manager has seen his side beat some of Sunderland’s pre-season promotion contenders so far this season, with home wins over Charlton Athletic and Scunthorpe United and an away win recently against Gillingham. The North-East side are heavy scorers and have scored seven goals in their past two games against two top sides, so Ardley’s Wimbledon will have to be in fine form to stop the former Premier League regulars. Players to watch on both sides include Wimbledon’s Joe Piggot and Kwesi Appiah, who both have one goal this season and Sunderland’s Josh Maja, who has four goals in four appearances this season. We make the away side our pick here after their fantastic start.

Recommended Bet: Sunderland to win at 23/20 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Blackpool vs Accrington Stanley

Blackpool host Accrington Stanley at Bloomfield Road on Saturday afternoon, with the away side having went unbeaten in the last three games. Both sides have made a half decent start to life in League One, with Terry McPhillips’ Blackpool having earnt seven points, with two wins and a draw, whilst John Coleman’s Stanley side sit mid-table on five points. Blackpool got off to a poor start, picking up just one point from their first two games, but have went unbeaten since with wins over Coventry in the third tier and Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. The former Premier League side also picked up a point on the road away to Shrewsbury Town with a 0-0 draw. Accrington have made an exciting start and their fans haven’t been far away from an exciting match, ranging from 3-2 wins on the road, to 6-1 losses in the cup. Both sides have their danger men in Joe Dodoo for the home team and Billy Kee for Accrington. We struggle to separate the two sides here, but we fancy there to be plenty of goals between two sides hoping to soar up the League One table.

Recommended Bet: Over 2.5 goals at 21/20 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Bradford City vs Wycombe Wanderers

Valley Parade is the host for this intriguing tie between Bradford City and Wycombe Wanderers, two sides who are on the hunt for better form than their first four outings. The home side managed by Michael Collins won their last match at home to relegated Championship side Burton Albion, but seem to struggle to build on results, evident after they won their opening game away to Shrewsbury Town, with Bradford then losing their following three matches. Collins’ side are rarely involved in high-scoring matches and often find themselves on either side of a narrow victory. City sit on six points after two wins and two losses in the league, but could find themselves as high as sixth if they win and results go their way. Collins’ side will have their targets this term, but anything short of a playoff place has to be considered a failure for one of the biggest clubs in the third tier. Wycombe have had a woeful start to their new season, with the League Two promoted side currently sat one place above the foot of the table and without a win. Gareth Ainsworth’s team sit picked up a point against Plymouth last match and will be hopeful of picking up more points in their second game on the road in four days. However, we are backing the home side to do the business on this occasion, making it four wins from their last four meetings.

Recommended Bet: Bradford City to win at 5/4 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Bristol Rovers vs Southend United

The Memorial Stadium in Bristol hosts a game between Bristol Rovers and Southend United on Saturday afternoon, as two sides at the wrong end of the League One table go to battle. Both teams are coming off the back of a loss, with Southend having been beaten on the road at Luton Town, whilst Rovers lost on their own patch against high-flying Portsmouth in a narrow 2-1 loss. Darrell Clarke’s side were on a winning-run prior to that, with a 2-1 win over Crawley Town in the first-round of the Carabao Cup and them a 2-1 win away from home at Wycombe. However, Rovers got off to a shocker in their first two games, with back-to-back 2-1 losses to Peterborough and Accrington Stanley. Interestingly, each game Moore’s side have played this season has ended in a 2-1 score-line. However, United will be coming to spoil Rovers’ attempt of taking all three points with a win, especially after losing 2-0 in their last outing. Chris Powell’s side sit mid-table and could see themselves soar up the third-tier standings with a win. And on this season’s form, we make Southend our pick here against an out of form Rovers.

Recommended Bet: Southend United to win at 13/8 with Betfair – BET HERE

Charlton Athletic vs Fleetwood Town

Charlton Athletic play their second match in four days at the Valley as they host an in-form Fleetwood Town side managed by well-known former player Joey Barton. Lee Bowyer’s side were tipped as one of the promotion candidates this season, but in their last three games Athletic have been uninspiring and have picked up just one point since their 2-1 home win to Shrewsbury Town early on in this month. However, one positive over the course of the five games they’ve played has been new forward Lyle Taylor, who has two goals in four games this term, grabbing the opener on both occasions. But Athletic play against another top side this weekend as the games come thick and fast, with Fleetwood looking to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Barton’s side hammered Scunthorpe United 5-0 away from home in midweek and have already cemented themselves as early season contenders for a place in the Championship. Both teams know each other relatively well and Charlton hold the cards in their recent head-to-head matches, but we struggle to separate the two sides this weekend in what is likely to be a high-scoring game. Therefore, we like the look of the in-form Taylor to grab the first goal, something he has already done on two different occasions this season.

Recommended Bet: Lyle Taylor to score first at 4/1 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Doncaster Rovers vs Portsmouth

The Keepmoat Stadium hosts the game between Doncaster Rovers and Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon. The tie could be one of the games of the weekend in League One, with both teams having shown good form in their recent games, especially the away side. The travelling team sit joint-top of the third tier with 12 points, having one all of their games in League One this season. Kenny Jackett’s men showed glimpses of being promotion candidates last season after finishing just outside the playoff places, but have really began the new season in style and will be looking to follow that up with a win on the road at the weekend. Grant McCann’s side go into the game off the back of a 0-0 draw at home to Shrewsbury, but their opening three games of the season saw Rovers go unbeaten, with wins over Southend and Wycombe in the league and Scunthorpe in the Cup. Both sides will be keen to build on their last outing, but we make Portsmouth our pick here after looking nothing short of phenomenal so far this season.

Recommended Bet: Portsmouth to win at 13/8 with William Hill – BET HERE

Gillingham vs Coventry City

Gillingham play their third game in eight days and their second successive game at Priestfield Stadium when they host Coventry City on Saturday afternoon. The home side’s last outing saw them play at home to former Premier League regulars Sunderland and they took the lead early on through top goal-scorer Tom Eaves, but lost the game 4-1 after struggling to keep up with the away side in most areas. However, the home side host a Coventry City side who haven’t been in great form this season, apart from a home win against Plymouth and they’ll be hopeful of picking up their first three points since their win at home to Burton Albion. The sides are separated by seven places in the league, but could be brought closer if City were to find some form to win the game. On the form book we make it tough to separate the sides from what we’ve seen this season, but talisman Eaves has four goals in four games this season and we make him our bet to grab another for the season and the first in this match at the weekend.

Recommended Bet: Tom Eaves to score first at 9/2 with Bet 365 – BET HERE

Luton Town vs Shrewsbury Town

Luton Town play their second game at Kenilworth Road in four days as they host last season’s playoff side Shrewsbury Town. Neither side has been in great form at four games into the League One campaign, but Town have been slightly better having picked up a 2-0 win in their recent game. Despite not picking up points Luton have actually looked solid defensively for the most part and an out of form Town side will have to find something they haven’t all season if they are to pick up points against the home team. However, John Askey’s side are unbeaten in their last two having drawn 0-0 on both occasions at home to Blackpool and more recently away to Doncaster. Both sides do haven’t met for three years, when they drew 0-0 in the corresponding fixture. However, on recent displays, we fancy Luton to narrowly defeat their opponents when the game kicks off between the sides at 3pm on Saturday.

Recommended Bet: Luton Town to win at 8/11 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Two up, Two down

Oxford United vs Burton Albion

Two of the most worst performing sides in the third tier meet at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday afternoon in an already hugely important game as Oxford United host Burton Albion. The home team have failed to win any of their last five matches and currently sit rock bottom of the League One table with no points. Whilst last season’s Championship relegated side Burton are one place outside of the relegation zone after picking up one win a game prior to their recent loss. Karl Robinson’s side go into Saturday’s game knowing nothing short of a win is acceptable against a side near them in the league. Their recent game saw United edged out 3-2 by Accrington Stanley and 4-1 away to Portsmouth prior to that. Robinson’s side do have a 2-0 win over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup this term, but haven’t showed any signs of a win in the third tier. Burton also haven’t looked very inspiring whatsoever, but do have back-to-back wins in the Cup against Shrewsbury and in the league against Doncaster. However, we struggle to separate these two sides and we are expecting the game to be of little quality and few goals.

Recommended Bet: Under 2.5 goals at 4/5 with Betfair – BET HERE

Plymouth Argyle vs Peterborough United

Plymouth Argyle have a huge task on their hands as they clash against the in-form side of League One Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon. Argyle sit in the relegation zone and haven’t picked up three points in a game all season, but have won away to Bristol City in the Carabao Cup and have picked up draws against Southend and Wycombe in the league campaign. However, Derek Adams’ side welcome a Peterborough side who have looked nothing short of sensational this season after winning all of their games in League One. The travelling side beat Charlton 1-0 away from home in their last outing and prior to that hammered Luton 3-1 at home. United have looked most threatening when on the road so far this season, which isn’t great news for an out of form Argyle side. Defender Mark O’Hara has unexpectedly been in the goals this season and he and the in-form talisman Jason Cummings will pose a big threat to the leaky defensive line of Plymouth. Therefore, we are backing travelling side Peterborough to win this game.

Recommended Bet: Peterborough United at 7/5 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Rochdale vs Walsall

Spotland Stadium hosts the game between Rochdale and Walsall on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking to pick up maximum points for different reasons. The home side sit only a few places above the relegation zone on four points after one win and a draw, whilst Walsall are part of the early chasing pack, hunting down the unbeaten four sides above them. The two teams have met each other on five occasions in the last two years and it’s actually the out of form side Rochdale who haven’t been beaten against their opponents. However, Walsall have started the season unbeaten in all competitions and Rochdale certainly face a tough task against some of the key players spearheading Walsall’s good form. Forward Andy Cook, who has two goals in four games and midfielders Luke Leahy and Zeli Ismail look the like players who could terrorise the Rochdale defensive line. And we are backing top of the table Peterborough to pick up yet another win on Saturday afternoon.

Recommended Bet: Walsall to win at 12/5 with William Hill – BET HERE

Scunthorpe United vs Barnsley

Pre-season promotion candidates Scunthorpe United have failed to win any of their last three matches and face yet another tough task against Barnsley at Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon. The travellers are undefeated in their last 13 matches and haven’t conceded a goal in their last four matches in League One. Scunthorpe are in awful form and have been hammered in their last two against Sunderland and Fleetwood, shipping eight goals across the two games. Nick Daws’ men were also knocked out of the cup at home to Doncaster after a 2-1 loss and it doesn’t get any easier for the Iron as they welcome another unbeaten League One team. Barnsley have been in fine form and recently hammered Rochdale on the road. Key to their success has been their forward line, with Tom Bradshaw, Mamadou Thiam and Victor Adeboyejo having scored five goals between them. And we are backing the away side to remain unbeaten in the third tier with another win on the road.

Recommended Bet: Barnsley to win at 8/11 with Sky Bet – BET HERE
