Motherwell vs Celtic

Motherwell take on Scottish League Cup winners Celtic on Wednesday night at Fir Park. Celtic won the League Cup for the fourth time in five years at the weekend as they edged past Aberdeen. Motherwell were beaten 2-0 away at Livingston on Saturday in a disappointing defeat and stay ninth in the table.

Motherwell have picked up their form in recent weeks, winning three of their last four before their disappointing 2-0 defeat at Livingston. In the last few weeks, they were looking more like the side that reached two cup finals last season. The Steelmen finished seventh last season but they currently sit ninth after a horrible start to the season. Stephen Robinson’s team picked up only five points from the first nine game of the season but have improved results and performance in the last month. Their away form is a key issue with the recent loss being their fifth loss in six games. They are priced up as 9/1 underdogs and after winning their last home match 3-0 against Aberdeen, there might be a few people tempted by the price.

Motherwell have won three of their last five games, starting with a 2-0 victory against relegation candidates St Mirren. They also defeated bottom side Dundee. In their last home game, the North Lanarkshire side secured a massive win, beating Aberdeen 3-0. It was a very unexpected result, as Aberdeen had won their last four games. They took advantage of horrific defending from the League Cup finalists by taking their chances and being clinical in front of goal. Danny Johnson grabbed a first half double and then David Turnbull sealed the win in the 54th minute to give Motherwell only their second home win of the season.

Celtic may have won the Scottish League Cup at the weekend but they will be eyeing top spot after Rangers took their place at the top of the table. Brendan Rodgers’ side have a game in hand but will be desperate to regain their position as leaders. The Hoops are unbeaten in eight games, winning seven of those. They defeated Aberdeen on Sunday as Ryan Christie scored the decisive goal late in the first haIf.

The Bhoys had a record-breaking slow start to the season but they are back in form and have secured seven-ninths of a first ever Scottish domestic clean sweep in three consecutive campaigns. Celtic would’ve been disappointed to drop two points against Livingston in their last game before the international break. However, they gained a point on Hearts, who have started to falter in recent weeks. Rodgers’ side have been on a great run of form, winning five in a row before their draw at Livingston. They scored 21 goals in those five games, and only two goals were conceded.

Celtic are 2/7 to win which is too short but we like the chances of them winning to nil at 1/1 which they have done in their last six domestic wins. The team have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight games. They have also been leading at half time in their last six domestic wins and it is 8/11 for Celtic to be leading at half time and full time.
