Zenit St Petersburg vs Rubin Kazan

Russian Premier League leaders Zenit St Petersburg welcome Rubin Kazan to the Krestovsky Stadium on Sunday in their last league game before the winter break, looking to bounce straight back from Monday’s 4-2 defeat to Arsenal Tula (their fourth of the campaign). The home side has won two of the last three meetings between the two sides, including a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture back in August. Rubin Kazan heads to Saint Petersburg off the back of three consecutive draws; the last of which came last Friday in a 1-1 with Dynamo Moscow. Zenit has only shared the points once this season, in a 0-0 draw with Spartak Moscow back in September.

After his team’s defeat on Monday, Zenit Coach Sergei Semak told reporters that everyone upped their game for the visit of Zenit. The league leaders have the second best goals for record in the Premier League this term, with striker and Russian national team captain Artyom  Dzyuba (11/10 with Bet365 to be an anytime goalscorer on Sunday) leading the way with five.

The Krestovsky Stadium is a fortress so far this term and Betfair offer odds of 6/4 for Zenit to win both halves. Zenit has still to taste defeat in front of their own fans and only Spartak Moscow leaving with any points. What will be of concern to Semak is that his side has now shipped six goals in their last two league matches having prior to that, only let in nine for the season so far. With qualification into the last 32 of the Europa League already secured, Semak can put out his strongest starting XI on Sunday with next week’s final group game against Slavia Prague a dead rubber.

The visitors have not won in their last six league outings and Rubin Kazan Coach Kurban Berdyev must fear that his second spell in charge of the club could be coming to a premature end. Kazan has drawn 10 of their 16 league games so far only scoring 15 goals in the process. Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun is the current leading marksman with four and Bet365 price him at 10/3 to score on Sunday although his last league goal came two months ago in a home win over FC Urai.

The last time Berdyev’s men scored more than one goal in a game was back on October 1 and should the result be another negative one on Sunday, then club officials may decide to make a change over the three-month winter break.
