Liverpool vs Napoli

It’s another European blockbuster at Anfield on Tuesday night as Liverpool host Napoli with a place in the last 16 of the Champions League at stake. The facts are simple; Liverpool has to win to have any chance of progressing into the knockout phase whilst Napoli will guarantee their continued involvement with a draw and could still qualify even with a defeat if Red Star Belgrade pulls off a shock against Paris Saint-Germain.

The two teams last met at Anfield eight years ago as a Steven Gerrard inspired Reds beat the Italian’s 3-1. In the reverse fixture this season, Napoli turned the tables with a late Lorenzo Insigne goal giving them the three points. Liverpool’s home record against Italian teams in Europe reads P11, W7, D0, L4 and boss Jurgen Klopp, whose side were well beaten in the Parc des Princes by Paris Saint-Germain last time out, knows it’s do or die in what promises to be a white-hot atmosphere.

Saturday’s routine demolition of Bournemouth sent the Merseyside giants to the top of the Premier League standings and Betfair are confident that Klopp’s men will see off the challenge of Napoli pricing them at 8/13 to win on Tuesday. Egyptian striker Mo Salah scored a hattrick on the south-coast and he’s priced at 7/2 by Betfair to score the first goal at Anfield.

Liverpool have scored 13 in their last five domestic outings only conceding one goal, but their European performances have been inconsistent although they have won their previous two at Anfield.

Napoli has never won a European tie in England but they warmed up for Tuesday with an emphatic 4-0 thrashing of Frosinone on Saturday. In Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly they have one of Europe’s most formidable centre-halves with recent reports suggesting the Partenopei turned down a €103M offer from Liverpool for his services.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti has a big decision to make up-front with big Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik pushing for a starting place after firing home a second-half double at the weekend. Bet365 make him 2/1 to be an anytime goalscorer on Tuesday with Insigne at 15/8 and Belgian international Dries Mertens at 7/4.

The Italian’s come into this game unbeaten in their last five in all competitions but they remain eight points behind Juventus at the top of Serie A. Napoli fans will hope that Ancelotti’s vast European experience can get them over this final hurdle on Tuesday and scupper Liverpool’s hopes of reaching a second successive Champions League Final next May.
