Championship Round-Up: 11/08/2018

The Championship returns again this Saturday, with all 24 teams in action and we’ve got a round up of all 12 fixtures below.

Aston Villa vs Wigan Athletic

This first match-up brings you two teams in good form, with both sides securing wins in their first game they will be searching for win number two. Wigan travel to Villa Park where they will face a strong Aston Villa side looking for a promotion spot this year. Villa played Hull City in their first game and kicked their season off with a 3-1 win away from home. Steve Bruce’s side started shaky after conceding the first goal after just seven minutes, but didn’t take long for to reply with defender Tommy Elphick scoring the equalising goal. Goals in the second half from former Tigers full-back Ahmed Elmohamady and Alan Hutton saw Hull off and sealed Villa’s first win of the season. Wigan started their season with a win against Sheffield Wednesday in a five-goal thriller which ended 3-2 in their favour. Winger Michael Jacobs scored a brace, with former Manchester United player Nick Powell scoring the Latics’ third goal. Both teams come into the game looking strong but we’re backing Aston Villa to get the win here.

Recommended Bet: Aston Villa win at 10/11 with Sky Bet – BET HERE

Blackburn Rovers vs Millwall

Blackburn Rovers host Millwall at Ewood Park in their second game of the season. Both teams failed to secure wins in their opening games, conceding goals late in stoppage time seeing them only come away with a point. Blackburn started the game falling behind after just five minutes, but goals from Danny Graham and Bradley Dack saw Rovers claw back the lead – only to lose it in the 91st minute. Tony Mowbray will want to work on his team defensively after playing well to gain the lead, only for the defence to lapse and concede late in the game. It was a similar story for Millwall, gaining a two-goal lead within the first half before letting Boro find a way back into the game with two goals in the 87th and 97th minute. This clash will prove to be very close and we can see it ending in a draw.

Swansea City vs Preston North End

This encounter brings you two teams looking to continue their good form after both won their opening games. Preston travel to the Liberty Stadium to play Swansea City as both sides look to make it six points from six at the start of the new season. Swansea took a while to find their feet at Bramall Lane, falling a goal behind to Sheffield United but goals from Oli McBurnie and Yan Dhanda completed a 2-1 comeback win. Winger Barrie McKay put in a strong performance on his debut and was awarded man of the match. Although Preston only won 1-0 against QPR last weekend, they dominated proceedings at Deepdale, giving little of the ball away and put on a delightful passing display for the fans albeit against poor opponents. Even though it wasn’t a completely convincing performance from Swansea last time out, we believe they have too much quality for Preston.

Recommended Bet: Swansea Win at 5/4 with SkyBet – BET HERE

Bolton Wanderers vs Bristol City

Bolton Wanderers caused the biggest upset in the Championship last weekend, beating one of the favourites to be promoted, West Brom, with a last-minute winner. Phil Parkinson’s side saw very little of the ball game, with West Brom dominating in possession yet it was the Trotters who took their chances when they came. In their second game, Bolton host Bristol City who come looking for their first win of the season after drawing against Nottingham Forest in a very even encounter. Andreas Weimann’s debut goal was cancelled out by Daryl Murphy’s equaliser as both teams were forced to settle for a point. Although Bolton made a dream start, we see Bristol pulling through and getting the win.

Recommended Bet: Bristol City to win at 29/20 with Bet365 – BET HERE

Stoke City vs Brentford

Stoke City take on a confident-looking Brentford side, who won their opening game 5-1 against newly-promoted Rotherham United. Stoke will have the home advantage which they may well need after a poor showing last time out against Leeds United, losing 3-1. Gary Rowett’s side struggled to create clear-cut chances, with their only goal of the game coming from the penalty spot. Brentford on the other hand did not struggle to create attacking moves, totalling up 14 shots with 10 hitting the target. They also dominated the game in terms of possession and gave Rotherham nothing to work with. Stoke will prove to be a tougher opponent but off of last weekend’s form we’re backing Brentford to get a result.

Recommended Bet: Brentford double chance at 4/6 with Ladbrokes – BET HERE

Rotherham United vs Ipswich Town

Newly-promoted Rotherham will get to play in front of their home fans for the first time this season when Ipswich travel to the New York Stadium at Saturday. Paul Warne’s first game in the Championship didn’t quite go to plan to say the least, with his side conceding five goals against Brentford. It’s safe to say the Millers were outclassed by their opponents, seeing very little of the ball and fears of this being a long, hard season were realised by even the most optimistic of Rotherham supporters. Ipswich’s first game saw them draw 2-2 against Blackburn, after scoring a late equaliser through the on-loan Tayo Edun. Ipswich have signed striker Kayden Jackson to replace Martyn Waghorn, who has joined Derby County and should be involved with the first team for game on Saturday. With home advantage, we’re backing Rotherham to get their first point of the season in this meeting.

Middlesbrough vs Birmingham City

Birmingham City travel to the Riverside Stadium on Saturday to play Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough, who won their first game of the season in midweek. Boro were outstanding on Tuesday night, putting the early shambles of the Millwall performance behind them by defeating Sheffield United 3-0. Martin Braithwaite, Aden Flint and Stewart Downing all netted as Middlesbrough took a commanding lead inside 25 minutes and killed the team inside the first half. Meanwhile, Garry Monk saw his side lose a 2-1 lead in the 94th minute in a game to draw 2-2 in a game where opponents Norwich asked plenty of questions of the Birmingham defence. It remains to be seen what the season will hold for Birmingham and Middlesbrough go into this game as strong favourites to take three points.

Recommended Bet: Middlesbrough to win at 8/11 with SkyBet – BET HERE

Queens Park Rangers vs Sheffield United

This encounter brings together two teams that have failed to impress in their opening fixtures and both will be looking for a more positive outcome by the end of Saturday. Sheffield United are the visitors travelling to London this weekend, facing QPR at Loftus Road. Steve McClaren’s first competitive game in charge was a bit of a disappointment, after seeing his side lose 1-0 against Preston in a game where they’re struggled to really make any kind of mark. Sheffield United may have felt unlucky to take nothing from their opening day meeting with Swansea, but can have no such qualms about their 3-0 loss to Middlesbrough in midweek. They were three goals down inside 25 minutes in an uninspiring showing from Chris Wilder’s side. This game is going to be a close one and feel that it will end in a draw.

Nottingham Forest vs Reading

This Championship clash will see big-spending Nottingham Forest take on Reading at the City Ground. This will be Forest’s third game of the season, having played midweek against West Brom, but Aitor Karanka is yet to see his side win after drawing both of their games so far. Karanka’s side have played well in both games, but have just struggled to convert their chances – having just two goals to show from 24 attempts at goal.. Reading fell victim to a late goal that cost them getting their first point of the season as Derby stole a late win in the 94th minute at the Madejski Stadium. Despite having significantly less possession, the Royals were solid in defence and looked pacey and positive when coming forward. Nottingham Forest are strong favourites to win this clash and we’ll backing them this weekend.

Recommended Bet: Nottingham Forest to win at 8/13 with SkyBet – BET HERE

Sheffield Wednesday vs Hull City

Sheffield Wednesday started their Championship campaign with a 3-2 loss against Wigan away from home, but will have the chance to put things right when they host Hull City at Hillsborough. Jos Luhukay’s side had a good foothold in their previous game having a fair share of possession but just the sheer amount of chances Wigan were creating meant they were always likely to concede. Nigel Adkins’ side had a tough first fixture, seeing them play Aston Villa in which they lost 3-1 due to a handful of defensive mistakes. Hull will want a more positive result on Saturday but it seems unlikely and we’ll be backing Sheffield Wednesday to pick up their first win in front of their home fans.

Norwich City vs West Brom

Norwich City take on West Brom at Carrow Road this Saturday, after the Canaries’ first game ended in a 2-2 draw at Birmingham, with three of the game’s goals coming in the last 10 minutes. Norwich kept the ball well and worked some good attacks, but failed to convert a majority of their chances. Norwich’s goals came from winger Onel Hernandez, who had a tremendous game causing the oppositions defence problems all game. Manager Daniel Farke highlighted that some players will need to improve and step up to fill the spots of James Maddison and Josh Murphy, who were their leading scorers last season. West Brom have had a disappointing start, losing to a Bolton side they were widely expected to beat and also drew 1-1 to Nottingham Forest in midweek. Darren Moore’s team have been so far struggling to hit the target so far, but with attackers like Hal Robson-Kanu, Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez they do not lack the potential to score. We are backing the Baggies to finally click this weekend and get their first win of the season here.

Recommended Bet: West Brom win at 17/10 with Betfair – BET HERE

Derby County vs Leeds United

Frank Lampard got off to the perfect start last game with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Reading. Mason Mount and Tom Lawrence both netted at the Madejski Stadium, as the Rams kicked off the Championship season in style on Friday night. They have since strengthened further, signing Fikayo Tomori, Scott Malone and Martyn Waghorn, all of whom are available for this next game. Since Marcelo Bielsa has taken over at Elland Road, there has been a complete culture change, as was highlighted by their victory over Stoke City last time out. The intensity of their play at Elland Road was exceptional, as they completely overwhelmed Gary Rowett’s team in front of an expectant Leeds crowd. Both of these teams will expect to be in and around the top six come the end of the season and this should be an exciting encounter in the standout fixture of the weekend.

Recommended Bet: Draw at 5/2 with SkyBet – BET HERE
