Aberdeen vs Celtic

Aberdeen head into their clash with the league leaders in third place and just three points off today’s opponents, which isn’t bad considering that they lost their top scorer, Adam Rooney, in summer and that Derek McInnes has had a battle with injuries throughout this campaign. Celtic are where everybody expects them to be. Top of the tree at Christmas but just one point clear of Rangers, who they face on Saturday, so this is a tough couple of days for the Bhoys in their title defence.

Aberdeen have won their last four in the league since defeat here against St Johnstone. The Dandies will be looking to silence many of the pundits expecting the visitors to continue their procession to the league title by extending their winning run to five, which they are 11/2 with Ladbrokes, to achieve. However, there are a couple of things going against them, including the fact that they haven’t recorded a home win on Boxing Day since 2006 when defeating Kilmarnock 3-1. That match, including three of their last four wins, saw the opposition score and Aberdeen to win with both teams scoring can be backed at a decent 12/1 with Sky Bet.

McInnes is able to call on one of the hottest properties in Scottish football right now. Sam Cosgrove is a young man to watch having scored eight goals so far this season. The 22-year-old has netted six in his last four matches and that purple patch includes bagging doubles against Dundee and Hearts. He opened the scoring in both of those matches and is a whopping 14/1 with Bet365 to break the deadlock, while he’s 11/2 just to score with Unibet. Aberdeen have won seven of their last eight, here at Pittodrie, then they could offer the league leaders a stern test, especially after they witnessed them failing in their last away game.

Celtic went down 2-0 in their previous away match at Hibernian but have bounced back with two successive 3-0 victories over Motherwell and Dundee to steady the ship. Brendan Rodgers’ men are 4/7 to make it three wins on the spin and take the points back to Glasgow to keep them top heading into Saturday’s much-anticipated Old Firm Derby at Ibrox. Some may feel Celtic are a short price considering they have only won once in their last four away games, having drawn at Livingston and Motherwell, so the Draw at 3/1 with Bet365 could attract some with the strong recent run the hosts have been on.

The Bhoys have won nine of their last ten league matches against Aberdeen and that’s quite a dominant recent run considering the Dons have been one of the sides to offer them the sternest battle in the pursuit of the title. The visitors will be looking to write their own piece of history in the Granite City having won on their last four visits to Pittodrie. If they were to win here, then they’ll have won five in a row for the first time in their history at Pittodrie. Youngster Michael Johnston has scored three goals in his last two games, and if getting the nod to start, could be worth a look to score first at 9/2 with Betfair, although there is one man who has enjoyed recent trips to Pittodrie. Kieran Tierney has scored in both of his last two league appearances here and is 12/1 to score at anytime with Betfred.
