AC Milan vs Real Betis

Such was the overachievement of Real Betis under Quique Setien, a trip to the storied San Siro to face AC Milan in European competition feels like a fitting reward for their efforts of the last campaign, finishing sixth, unthinkably one place above their city rivals Sevilla.

So easy on the eye were Real Betis last season that “always watch Betis” was a popular mantra on social media, but they have struggled for goals this season and look a little more sluggish and out of ideas, like Spain or Barcelona at their most sterile. Milan meanwhile have had a promising start to the season under Gennaro Gattuso but will be looking to bounce back after the heartbreak of Mauro Icardi’s last-minute winner against them in Sunday’s Milan derby.

Milan had actually done pretty well to keep Inter at bay, and the Argentinian striker to barely any influence, touches or shots. But he only needs one chance, and he duly punished them when it came in injury time. The winner denied Gattuso’s men a point, but it also denied them a rare clean sheet, which they are yet to record in Serie A so far this season. Their only clean sheet in all competitions came against minnows Dudelange.

Ivan Strinic and Riccardo Montolivo are both out through injury, so their defence could be set to struggle for a little while longer, though Mattia Caldara, signed from Juventus in the summer and touted by many to be the next great Italian centre-half, could finally be set to make his second appearance. His debut against Dudelange was the only match in which Milan have kept a clean sheet, after all.

However, often the lack of clean sheets hasn’t stopped Milan picking up points, and they have defeated Chievo, Sassuolo, Olympiakos, and Roma so far this season while conceding. Ladbrokes, Unibet and Coral all offer odds of 5/6 for both teams to score, while BetVictor offers odds of 29/10 for both teams to score and Milan to win.

Gonzalo Higuain has scored in both Europa League appearances for Milan so far this season, with four in six in the league. Sunday’s derby was the first time in six games that the Argentine failed to find the back of the net. BetVictor offers odds of 11/8 for him to score anytime here, with a very generous 9/2 that he scores first.

Real Betis, after earning a reputation as free-flowing dangerous goalscorers last season, have had to deal with teams going for a defensive approach and deploying a low block to stop them getting forward this time around, and William Carvalho, something of a statement signing, is struggling to adapt and more often than not simply slows down their style. They have failed to score in consecutive games against Atletico Madrid and Real Valladolid either side of the international break, while their last four league games have finished 1-0 either way. Bet365 offer odds of 10/11 of under 2.5 goals.

While their Europa League opener against Olympiakos was goalless, they did manage to score three against Dudelange, and the more open and attacking AC Milan might play into their hands and allow them to play their game more than the opposition they face in Spain.

With back-to-back clean sheets in the Europa League so far, their defence has actually been their strong point this season, and if they could just keep that going while improving offensively, they’d look a tremendously well-balanced side. But it’s a little bit like Liverpool, who have massively improved at the back while not looking so dangerous going forward – is it possible to have both? Is more vulnerability and volatility at the back needed if they’re to start scoring.

Betis have beaten Dudelange, Leganes, Girona and Sevilla already this season while keeping clean sheets. Bet365 offer odds of 6/1 for Betis to get a famous win at the San Siro, while keeping a clean sheet.

This match is an interesting mix of two sides with very contrasting styles and recent records. Milan’s games almost always feature both teams scoring, while Betis’s almost never do. Which record continues here?
