Arsenal vs Fulham

Arsenal will be looking for a fresh start in 2019 after ending 2018 with an embarrassing defeat as they host Fulham at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners were thrashed 5-1 by Liverpool at Anfield last time out, while their opponents picked up a huge result by beating Huddersfield 1-0 at Craven Cottage.

Arsenal showed signs of their old selves coming back to haunt them at Anfield on Saturday evening, as the team were completely ripped apart by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. An early Ainsley Maitland-Niles goal had given Unai Emery’s men the perfect start, but some extremely naive defending saw the Reds thump five in to stay top of the league. A Roberto Firmino hat-trick was added to by strikes from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, in a result which evoked memories of 2014. It highlighted the work Emery still has with this team, who for all of their impressive play still look suspect in defence and need a player of Virgil van Dijk’s calibre to come in and make an impact. Despite winning just one of their last five, the Gunners are heavy 4/11 favourites to win here with SkyBet.

If they are to get three points here, they will need their attacking players to be far more involved than they were at Anfield. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started the defeat at Liverpool and had just 10 touches before being replaced – six of which came from kick-offs. He is expected to start here and will be hoping to add to his return of 13 league goals. He is best-priced at 14/5 with Betway to open the scoring in this game. Despite the recent negativity surrounding the team, it’s easy to forget that Arsenal have won each of their last three home games in the Premier League and that Manchester City are the only side to win at the Emirates this term.

Fulham moved to within a point of safety on Saturday afternoon, as the team picked up a huge three points in the 1-0 defeat of Huddersfield Town at Craven Cottage. It was an excellent result for the Lilywhites, who are now unbeaten in each of their last three games, keeping two clean sheets in the process. They left it late against the Terriers last time out, as a 91st minute winner from Aleksandar Mitrovic sealed a huge three points that could well be the catalyst for them escaping danger. Fulham are currently priced at 9/1 to win here with Betfair.

The switch to a back three seems to have really benefited Fulham of late, with the team now defending in greater numbers and have conceded just one goal in their last three matches in the Premier League. Claudio Ranieri will be pleased with the improvement of his team, who appear to have bought into what he is trying to achieve in recent weeks. However, the change to a more defensive system appears to have hampered the team going forward. Fulham have scored just twice in their last four games in the Premier League, both of which have come in the final 20 minutes of games through Mitrovic and Ryan Sessegnon. Given the vulnerability Arsenal showed at Anfield, Ranieri may encourage his team to have more of a go against Arsenal on the counter attack.
