Arsenal vs Qarabag

Arsenal host Qarabag in the Europa League on Thursday evening with The Gunners having already secured top-spot in Group E. The visitors have already been eliminated so they will head to The Emirates with just pride to play for. Arsenal won the reverse fixture 3-0 on matchday two, the first ever meeting between the two sides and are as short as 2/9 with Ladbrokes to do the double on Thursday, with Qarabag a massive 14/1 shot with the same bookmaker.

Unai Emery’s Arsenal side has gone 360 minutes without conceding a goal in this competition and are undefeated so far, having won four and drawn one of their five matches. If their goal remains intact on Thursday, they will equal a Europa League record set by Napoli and Salzburg .The Gunners have only ever lost one of their nine home ties in this competition and have scored 22 goals in the process. Betfair are offering odds of 5/4 for there to be over 3.5 goals despite what is likely to be a much changed Arsenal team.

The hosts warmed up for this game with a narrow 1-0 win against Huddersfield last weekend thanks to a superb goal from midfield star Lucas Torreira and have now gone 22 games without defeat in all competitions. Thursday should give the Emirates faithful another chance to see the burgeoning skills of teenagers Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock who were both on scoresheet as Arsenal’s young guns impressed in a 3-0 away win over Group E strugglers Vorskla. Defender Rob Holding is out for the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the recent 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, but Mesut Ozil could return to the starting XI in place of Torreira, having now recovered from a back injury.

Qarabag has scored 11 goals in their last two domestic fixtures but their form in this season’s Europa League has been dismal. Last time out in this competition they suffered a humiliating 6-1 reverse at home to Sporting Lisbon and coach Gurban Gurbanov will want to see some sort of reaction in North London.

Their record against English clubs makes for uncomfortable reading however, with the team from Azerbaijan having lost all of their previous five meetings shipping 17 goals in the process. Qarabag has also lost six of their last seven matches in the Europa League but can take some heart from the fact that they won last time they were on the road against Vorskla Poltava.
