Arsenal vs Sporting CP

The fourth round of this season’s UEFA Europa League group stage action features an interesting game between the top two teams in Group E, as Unai Emery’s Arsenal welcome Tiago Manuel Matos da Costa Fernandes’ Sporting to the Emirates Stadium in Thursday’s evening late kick-off. The hosts have won all three in the group so far, scoring eight goals along the way, whilst Sporting have lost just once – with that loss coming against Arsenal in the reverse fixture which ended 1-0 to the Gunners at the end of last month. This tie will be only the second ever meeting between the sides and arguably the most important, with a win for either side potentially sealing their spot in the knockout stage with two matches to go.

Emery’s Arsenal look a completely different side from previous years which saw them often come under severe pressure with manager Arsene Wenger in charge. The Gunners have lost twice this campaign, but both of those defeats came to the hands of the impressive Manchester City and in a narrow 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in the first two fixtures of the season. Their wins over the likes of Leicester in the Premier League and away to Sporting were both victories in which they had to grind out and those games were perhaps matches they’d have lost under previous management. A win here is obvious short odds of 1/3 with Betway, but after three of their last five wins has also seen the opposition score, that bet here could be an attractive one at 15/8 with Sky Bet.

Arsenal’s previous match in Portugal against Sporting saw them win to nil and defend in magnificent fashion and a clean sheet here is 5/6, also with Sky Bet. Looking to help their side win here will be the impressive dynamic duo of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who have a combined total of 15 goals between them and both men will be desperate to score on the big stage here. The Frenchman to score first here is 15/4, whilst teammate Aubameyang is 11/4 for the first goal – both with Bet365. Also likely to start is the winner of the reverse fixture Danny Welbeck and the Englishman to bag in 90 minutes here is 11/10 with Sky Bet.

Sporting CP have also made a good start to the Europa League campaign and aside from a narrow 1-0 loss to Thursday’s opponents in their most recent fixture on the big stage, they currently sit second in Group L after a 2-1 win over Vorskla and a 2-0 comfortable win over Qarabag in their opening match. A win at the Emirates for Fernandes’ team is a huge price of 19/2 with Betfair, whilst the draw is 22/5 with Bet Victor.

Sporting’s last seven wins in both the Portuguese top-flight, also known as the Primeira Liga and the Europa League competition has seen the travellers score at least two goals and two goals here against an Arsenal side who have been known for having a shaky defence, especially their second-string side, could be a possibility here. That bet can be found at odds of 9/2, whilst Sporting to score just one goal here is an attractive 5/6 – both bets being with Sky Bet.

The men who will be the clear threat to the defence of Emery’s side lie in the form of former Manchester United winger Nani, a player who has five goals this term and also a player the Arsenal fans know all too well from his stint with Manchester United, as well as target man Bas Dost – who will be a problem for any defence on his day. Nani to grab the first goal here is 12/1 with Bet365, whilst Dost to get one any time is 13/5 with the same bookmaker and both players to score is a huge 14/1 with Sky Bet.
