Aston Villa v Derby County – 2019 Championship Play-Off Final

The curtain comes down on the English football season on Bank Holiday Monday as Aston Villa and Derby County face off at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.

Aston Villa are hoping that it will be a case of second time lucky for them as they return to Wembley and the Championship play-off final one year on from their defeat against Fulham. The West Midlands outfit are looking for a return to the Premier League after being out of the top flight for three seasons in a row.

For Derby, they are another team who has suffered play-off heartache before and they will want to put that right. The Rams have been out of the Premier League since relegation in 2008, and since then have been involved in four play-off campaigns, losing them all. In that time that have only made it to the final once, when they played QPR in 2014 and were beaten by a late goal from Bobby Zamora.

With so much on the line it will be a tense afternoon in North London, with both desperate to seal promotion to the top flight after a season of hard work. We have previewed the match below and provided a few betting tips for you to consider.

Dean Smith Aston Villa Championship play-off final

Dean Smith will be hoping to guide Aston Villa into the Premier League by winning the Championship play-off final.

Betting Predictions for the 2019 Championship Play-Off Final

Aston Villa came into the play-offs very much as the form side in the league, stringing together an unbelievable run of results to surge from mid-table into the top six between March and May. Ironically the first win of their streak came against Derby County whom they battered 4-0 at Villa Park, before then going on to win the next nine matches in a row to seal fifth place.

In the play-off semi-final they took on local rivals West Brom and just about edged what was an extremely close tie. A 2-1 home win was followed by a 1-0 defeat at the Hawthorns, but they managed to hold their nerve and win the penalty shootout.

There can be no doubting that Tammy Abraham and Jack Grealish have been the standout performers for Villa of late. Abraham is their top goalscorer with 26 to his name all told, whilst Grealish has captained the side and his return to the team from injury coincided with their surge in form.

However, another player who has been crucial for them is Conor Hourihane and we think that he could have a major part to play at Wembley. The former Barnsley midfielder proved himself as a man for the big occasion when he came off the bench to score against West Brom in the semi-final and he has particularly enjoyed playing against Derby this season. Indeed the Irishman has netted three of his eight league goals this term against the Rams, so he could well be worth a look at backing to score anytime with odds of 5/1 with Betfair.

Aston Villa’s Conor Hourihane has scored three times already against Derby County this season.

As for Derby County, they had been in and around the play-offs for the majority of the season before ultimately sealing their top six place on the final day of the campaign. They took on Leeds United in the semi-finals and after losing 1-0 at home in the first leg before then going 2-0 down on aggregate early on at Elland Road, their season looked but be over.

But Frank Lampard’s side found some steel within themselves to come back and they incredibly managed to win 4-3 on aggregate thanks to goals from Mason Mount, Harry Wilson and a brace from Jack Marriott. All three of those players are expected to start at Wembley, and it may be worth looking at backing Marriott to score anytime at 12/5 with Paddy Power after his introduction changed the tie against Leeds.

These two sides have played each other twice this season and the results have been extremely one-sided. Aston Villa have beaten Derby County 4-0 and 3-0 this term, and unfortunately for Lampard and Derby we see Dean Smith’s side beating them for a third time at Wembley. Villa are best priced at 5/4 to win in 90 minutes with bet365.

We don’t think it will be as emphatic as their previous two wins against the Rams however, as play-off final matches tend to be more cagey with so much on the line. Indeed each of the last six have finished up with under 2.5 goals which may be a bet worth looking at backing this with odds of 4/5 available with bet365.
