Atalanta vs Napoli Betting Preview – 03/12/2018

Atalanta vs Napoli

There’s Monday night action in Serie A as Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli travel to Bergamo to take on Atalanta. Napoli have struggled against Atalanta in recent years. They’ve lost three of their last five matches against them, including a home defeat in the Coppa Italia last season.

Atalanta have overachieved to qualify for the Europa League in recent years but struggled for form this season, although that has considerably picked up in recent weeks. After a run of nine winless games, they’ve now won five of their last six games and look capable of challenging for the top six once again.

The run included a stunning 4-1 result against high-flying Inter Milan, so Napoli have to be careful they’re not on the end of a similar scoreline. Key man Josip Ilicic is suspended though, and the Slovenian was integral to Atalanta’s performance that day, providing two assists. He was sent off the following week as his team surprisingly lost to Empoli in a frustrating match. They had taken a 2-0 lead but somehow conspired to throw it away, with Ilicic’s frustrations boiling over at 2-2.

However, Alejandro Gomez will be fit to play in the number ten role, and he’s been another of Atalanta’s better performers this season. He’s their top scorer with four league goals, which underlines how much others, such as Duvan Zapata, have struggled. The Colombian striker has just one goal in sixteen appearances this season, but is expected to lead the line once again.

Their games have tended to be high-scoring in recent weeks, with a 5-1 over Chievo alongside the 4-1 against Inter, there have been two 3-0 wins and the 3-2 loss. Each of their last six games in all competitions have featured 2.5 goals or more. That can be backed to happen again at 8/11 with Bet365. Both teams to score, which has happened in four of their last six matches, can be backed at 5/9 with Unibet.

Napoli have fared well under Ancelotti but have been unable to keep up with the unstoppable pace of the still-unbeaten domestically Juventus. However, while they’re not equipped to record the 100 points that will be necessary to win a title, they’re in a good position to retain their status of runners-up and would go back into 2nd with another win.

They’ll be looking to get back to winning ways after last weekend’s frustrating goalless draw against struggling Chievo. They dominated possession and had the lion’s share of chances, but had something of an off night offensively and were unfortunate to come up against a brilliant goalkeeping performance from Chievo’s Stefano Sorrentino.

Any worries about their attacking interplay were put to bed as Napoli breezed past Red Star Belgrade in midweek, with a brace from Dries Mertens alongside Marik Hamsik’s first goal of the season. That they held the powerhouse of PSG to draws home and away underlines their true quality, while they remain unbeaten away from home.

A Napoli win can be backed at 5/4 with SkyBet and extended to 3/1 with PaddyPower for them to win alongside both teams scoring. They’ve conceded one goal in each of their last three wins, and Atalanta’s form in that regard is also established. With a point to prove and the key players like Lorenzo Insigne, Mertens and Jose Callejon all fit and able to start, Napoli should have too much in this tricky fixture.
