Barcelona v Valencia

Last weekend’s FA Cup final saw the deciding fixture in England’s biggest cup competition, and this weekend is an opportunity for Spain to do the same. Barcelona appear in the Copa del Rey final for the sixth successive time, winning on all six previous attempts, with Valencia featuring in the concluding game of the competition for the first time since 2008, where they were crowned winners over Getafe.

Aiming to win La Liga this season has been easier than ever through Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid showing very little effort to challenge them, but Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde could be in trouble if the club choose to sack him following yet another disappointing late exit in the Champions League from an originally winning position. Claiming the Copa del Rey would see Barca clinch the Spanish domestic double could be enough to convince Barcelona that it’s worth keeping hold of Valverde for now, so it means more than ever.

Labelling Valencia’s season as a mixed bag would only be the tip of the iceberg, struggling to get wins away for a lot of the term, looking stronger towards the end of the campaign, and even making it to as far as the Europa League semi-final before finding defeat to Arsenal. It would only further the bizarre season Marcelino has had at Valencia in them ending up defying the odds to win the Copa del Rey ahead of the clear favourites they face.

Valencia players Rodrigo Moreno and Santi Mina are the top scorers still in the Copa del Rey, each with four goals to their names.

Predictions for the Copa del Rey Final

Even considering the disastrous Champions League semi-final second leg defeat that saw Barcelona lose in the worst possible way to Liverpool, there’s no doubting the quality of this side or doubting their 1/4 price to win the Copa del Rey this season. You can’t entirely discredit Valencia though, especially as their form has improved throughout the campaign and they’ve scored fourteen goals in their last four away games alone. With this in mind, backing Barcelona and both teams to score at 7/4 boosts the 1/2 price for Barcelona simply to win the game whilst including an outcome that’s almost as likely.

Twenty-four goals have featured in the last seven Copa del Rey finals alone, so it seems likely to expect a lot of goals again between Barcelona and Valencia. The two meetings between these sides this season have also had six goals, but determining where these goals will occur in the Copa del Rey final is another challenge in itself. Based on how dominant Barcelona are in the competition and how crucial it is that they claim the trophy again this season, we think the option of backing Barca to score in both halves at odds as high as 23/20 is worth considering, and it’s something that appears more often than not.
