Barcelona vs Sevilla Betting Preview – 20/10/2018

Barcelona vs Sevilla

Barcelona welcome surprise leaders Sevilla to Camp Nou on Saturday in the game of the weekend in La Liga Santander.

Sevilla are proving to be the surprise package In La Liga so far this season, taking the league by storm and moving into top spot before the international break. Pablo Machin’s men have been as entertaining as they are ruthless in the opening stages of the season and they head to Barcelona with sky-high confidence. Barca, meanwhile, welcome the leaders on the back of four league games without a win.

Barcelona came into this season as strong favourites having won the league title at a canter last season and with the loss of Ronaldo in the capital. However, they have struggled to make the most of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid’s poor starts the campaign with a juddering first eight games of their own.

Valverde’s men have won just four of their first eight games, leaving them in second place and one point behind this week’s opponents Sevilla. That’s a statistic they will be looking to adjust this weekend with a home win to move to the top of the pile.

Though, if recent form is anything to go by, then the home side may struggle to claim all three points. Valverde’s men are winless in four in the league following draws with Valencia, Athletic Club, and Girona, as well as a defeat to Leganes. Last time out, Barca had to come from behind to draw with Valencia at Mestalla, a ground they have long struggled at, with Lionel Messi coming up with the all-important equaliser.

Prior to that, Barcelona beat Tottenham 4-2 at Wembley to cement their place at the top of their Champions League group. Despite their recent for, Barcelona are favourites to win this one, priced at 1/3 with Bet365 and Ladbrokes. Remarkably, most bookmakers are offering 5/1 on a draw and those are odds worth taking advantage of.

Lionel Messi has again been the star man for the Catalonians this season, netting six league goals so far and he is at 9/4 to grab the first goal this weekend with Bet365. The Champions League may be Barcelona’s main focus this season in a bid to disrupt Real Madrid’s claim over the competition, but they’ll still be focussed on retaining the league title.

A win this weekend will be crucial in getting them back to form. The odds are short on most Barcelona win markets, but why not spice things up with a half-time draw/full-time Barcelona win at 10/3 with Ladbrokes.

Sevilla are a team to be taken seriously this season. They made the excellent decision of appointing former Girona boss Pablo Machin over the summer and he is already proving his worth. Los Rojiblancos currently sit top of the pile having won five of their eight games, losing twice.

Machin’s men are currently on a run of four consecutive league wins, beating Celta Vigo, Eibar, Real Madrid and Levante in recent weeks and they don’t look like slowing up any time soon. Having said that, they face the ultimate test heading to Barcelona this weekend and they know it’s one they must come out of alive if they want to be considered serious challengers for the title.

A draw at Camp Nou would undoubtedly represent a good result and they look more than capable of achieving that given their recent form. As mentioned earlier, most bookmakers are offering 5/1 on that eventuality. Even with their recent form, a Sevilla win does seem unlikely, but they are 13/2 to take all three points with Bet365.

Last time out, Sevilla beat Celta Vigo 2-1, conceding late on for the scoreline to lose its shine. Celta had a man sent off with just over 30 minutes remaining to make things easier, and Sevilla took full advantage when Ben Yedder scored three minutes after the dismissal. Pablo Sarabia netted the opener inside the first-half. That result followed a disappointing defeat in the Europa League, losing to Krasnodar 2-1. Sevilla have now won one and lost one in Europe.

Andre Silva has been Sevilla’s star man so far this season, netting seven goals in his first eight games. The Portuguese is 7/4 to score at any time with William Hill, as is Wissam Ben Yedder, who has scored five goals, including one last time out. Those odds are worth taking advantage of, particularly for Ben Yedder, who likes to score against the big clubs.
