Bayer Leverkusen vs Stuttgart Betting Preview – 23/11/2018

Bayer Leverkusen vs Stuttgart

The Bundesliga’s back on Friday night as the wildly unpredictable Bayer Leverkusen take on the league’s whipping boys Stuttgart. A draw would yield a good result for the visitors, while anything less than a win would be extremely disappointing for the hosts.

The pressure is really on Bayer Leverkusen boss Heiko Herrlich, and his job could be in danger if they don’t start climbing up the table soon. Their current position of 13th, with just one win from their last five games, is far from good enough. They threatened to find their feet at the end of October, by impressively thrashing Werder Bremen 6-2 away before knocking out surprise package Borussia Monchengladbach in the DFB Pokal with an emphatic 5-0 win at BayArena.

But while they’ve been impressive in the cup competitions, and recently beat Zurich to go top of their Europa League group, the good performances were something of a false dawn as they’ve lost their last two Bundesliga fixtures and have failed to get up to the top half of the table. The 4-1 suffered at home to Hoffenheim looked like they might have hit a nadir, but the following week’s 3-0 loss at RB Leipzig wasn’t any better.

It’s been two weeks to dwell on their poor league performances, but they really should be capable of mustering a win over the Bundesliga’s bottom side, with RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim much more difficult tests, sitting in third and sixth respectively.

Bayer have kept just one clean sheet and won just once in the league this season, both of which came from the 1-0 win over Mainz two months ago. They’ve got odds of 1/2 with Bet365 here, which reflects more on the poor opposition than anything particularly encouraging about them. That can be extended to 9/5 with Ladbrokes for a win with both teams scoring, which is likely considering Bayer’s terminally poor record at home: Hoffenheim, Dortmund and Wolfsburg have scored eleven goals between them at the BayArena this season.

Stuttgart were celebrating a rare victory in their last match as they went to fellow strugglers, 15th-placed Nurnberg, and recorded a 2-0 win away from home. They’ll have been cursing the international break stunting their momentum.

The win was desperately needed, but it wasn’t enough to take them off the bottom spot, although they are now within two points of safety. The three points put an end to a desperately poor run of form, in which they lost four consecutive games, conceding at least three in each match and 14 in total, scoring just once.

French World Cup-winning hero Benjamin Pavard has featured, often in the middle, alongside Timo Baumgartl but as a defensive unit they just don’t convince, while Ron-Robert Zieler is not convincing between the sticks.

Goals are another issue, with German international veteran Mario Gomez struggling to score regular goals up front. He’s their top scorer but has just three goals in total, and has failed to live up to his impressive centre-forward performance back in mid-September, when he scored a brace in a 3-3 draw to upset the odds against high-flying Freiburg.

Such a performance away at superior opposition, not to mention their last game, needs to be the inspiration here, and they should look at Leverkusen’s leaky defence as an opportunity. Gomez can be backed at 21/10 with Betfred to score anytime. Those are good odds considering Bayer Leverkusen struggle for clean sheets and if anyone is likely to score for Stuttgart, it’s Gomez, having contributed three of their total of eight in the league.
