Belgium v Egypt Betting Preview – 06/08/18

Roberto Martinez’s Belgium could well be the surprise package at this years World Cup. With a squad packed full of world class talent, they’re predicted to win Group G ahead of England, Tunisia & Panama. They head into this summer’s tournament in positive form after acing their qualifying group last year. Nine wins from ten qualifying matches meant that Martinez’ side won Group H at a canter, with second placed Greece finishing a colossal 9 points behind them when the qualifiers came to a finish last October.

Since their last group game with Cyprus back in the Autumn, Belgium have gone on to draw two and win two of their proceeding four international friendly matches. Their most recent encounter ended in a 0-0 draw against Euro 2016 Champions Portugal at the weekend, which stretched their overall unbeaten run to a hugely impressive 17 games in all competitions. The ‘Red Devils’ are an extremely strong outfit on home soil too, losing just two matches in their motherland in the last 5 years.

With players like Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Moussa Dembele, Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyene & Romelu Lukaku (among others) all at their disposal for the World Cup this year, Belgium could be the dark horses in Russia. They’ll want to continue with their positive preparations with another win against a much inferior Egypt side here, and with the quality they possess in all areas of the pitch, we can’t look past a home win in this one. The odds for this are extremely short however, so we would suggest backing either a -1 handicap for the hosts or them to win to nil here.

Egypt’s chances of World Cup success rest on the shoulder(s) of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. Without the former Chelsea man in their side, they’re a completely average outfit that lack any real cutting edge or creativity going forward. The whole of Egypt are reliant on the Reds magician to pull something out of the bag in Russia, so when he went off injured following a robust challenge from Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final a fortnight ago, fans across the country would have been left fearing the worst. Luckily though, Salah is expected to be fit for Egypt’s second group game against Russia on June 19th, but will probably be rested for their opening clash against Uruguay next Friday as a precaution.

The visitors made it through to this years World Cup with relative ease after winning their qualifying group ahead of Uganda, Ghana & Congo. This was largely thanks to Salah’s 5 goals, without them it’s more than likely that Egypt would have slipped to below second placed Uganda and not made it through so it’s clear to see just how massive he is to this otherwise fairly limited Egypt side. Preparations for the World Cup haven’t exactly gone to plan for Egypt so far. They’re still searching for their first friendly win following lacklustre draws to both Columbia and Kuwait and defeats to Greece and Portugal. They’ll also be without talisman Mohamed Salah for this clash against the Belgian powerhouses, so it’s looking likely that their winless run will continue come Wednesday evening.
