Manchester United vs Liverpool

The battle for 2nd in the Premier League continues in Saturday’s early kick off as Manchester United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford. Just two points separate the sides as they both look to strengthen their grip on a Champions League place for next season. United are the slight favourites but it’s Liverpool that come into the game in better form. Jurgen Klopp’s side have only lost once in the league since August and have won all of their last three. United have also had a good couple of weeks with back to back wins against Chelsea and that dramatic 3-2 comeback win against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

It’s the 170th North West Derby in the league with United winning 67 of the meetings compared to Liverpool’s 55. Here’s what we predict for the this weekends big encounter.

United back to their best?

Jose Mourinho’s side sent out a big statement with that win against Palace on Monday. They’re beginning to play with confidence again and on Monday they had a Ferguson-esque performance. Nemanja Matic’s late stunner was the first time since 2013 that United had come back from two goals down to win and the scenes at the end showed just how much it meant to both the players and the fans. The Red Devils are trying to maintain that best of the rest position behind their neighbours, Manchester City, but a defeat here could well and truly put United back in a top 4 battle once again. Facing Liverpool may mean that Mourinho sets up his side to stop the likes of Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino rather than focus on his own attacking talent, and Jose will make sure he cuts out the defensive mistakes that nearly cost them on Monday. With no game between these two boasting more than two goals since 2015, we predict a low scoring game here. If you think that under 2.5 goals is likely again,  you can back this at 10/11 with Paddy Power .

Can Klopp get the better of Jose again?

This Liverpool side are looking better and better every week.  Jurgen Klopp’s brought a high energy and high action game that has seen his side score a remarkable 67 goals already this campaign. They’re starting to look better at the back too with 4 clean sheets in their last 5 in all competitions. On Tuesday they confirmed their place in the Champions League Quarter finals with a 5-0 aggregate win over Porto. With all of the five goals coming in the first leg, Klopp was able to rest some of his key players, including top scorer Salah, and was still able to play out a goalless draw at Anfield. Klopp has only been beaten by Mourinho once in their 9 meetings including three victories and is confident of extending his good record this weekend. Salah has been in sensational form all season with 24 Premier League goals already this season, including 13 goals in his last 9 starts. The Egyptian has also scored the first goal in a game 10 times this season so looks the most likely to break United’s tight defensive line. If you fancy Salah to score first, he’s 4/1 to so with Betfair.
