Birmingham City vs West Brom Betting Preview – 14/09/2018

Birmingham City vs West Bromwich Albion

With the International break coming to an end this week, the Championship returns on Friday evening with Darren Moore’s West Brom taking on Garry Monk’s Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s Stadium. Birmingham will enter this game with still not one single win to their name this season making them one of just three sides that are yet to win a match so far. Monk will hope he can put this winless drought to an end but with West Brom as their opponents it will be a tough task, as the Baggies are the highest scoring team in the league so far with 15 goals to their names.

We are now six games into the new season and Birmingham still have zero wins under their belt and find themselves just four spots off the bottom of the league. The only reason they are currently out of the relegation zone is that they have managed to hold four teams to draws.

Their previous match saw them face QPR, which was a huge chance to seal their first three points of the season as they also find themselves struggling at the bottom of the league. However, the Blues were not able to put their winless start to an end, with their finishing lacking serious quality throughout the game with just one shot registering on target. The match finished 0-0 with their opponents looking more likely to score throughout the game but Lee Camp had a solid performancem doing well to keep a clean sheet.

For Birmingham, the early signs suggest this could well be a difficult campaign after struggling in their opening matches. Goals have been a problem for the Blues so far, with them managing to score just four goals, with strikers Che Adams and Lukas Jutkiewicz scoring one apiece. Monk will need his forwards to step up if they want to climb the table and steer clear of the relegation zone. Also, the Blues are still without Isaac Vassell following his hip injury and Gary Monk had stated that it was not possible to put a timescale on his return yet.

West Brom have enjoyed a more positive start to their season with three wins, one draw and two losses to their name which puts them up in 9th, but Darren Moore will want more from his side who have more than enough within them to gain promotion back into the Premier League this season.

Moore’s side comes into this match off of a 2-1 win against Stoke City. Dwight Gayle was West Brom’s star man as he snatched himself a brace to see his side go 2-0 up. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was called upon multiple times during the game and the former Manchester United man showed his quality, despite seeing Erik Pieters flash in an effort. The Baggies held out to go into the international break with a victory to their name and will be looking to continue the winning feeling here.

Albion’s most recent showing in the Carabao Cup had them face Mansfield who put up a good fight but goals from academy products Jonathan Leko and Kyle Edwards saw their side 2-1. These was the youngsters first senior goals for West Brom and will look forward to future chances to play for their side in the Carabao Cup as they progress to round three.

Moore’s side have been dangerous in the final third this season, proving to be very clinical in front of goal and currently find themselves as the highest-scoring team in the league with 15 goals. While almost half of those came in the 7-1 thrashing of QPR, you can’t ignore the huge change in style of play that the Baggies have adopted this season compared to the previous reign of Tony Pulis, where defending came first.

West Brom are keen in signing 30-year-old Bakary Sako, who is currently a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace in the summer, but there is a lot of interest being shown in the forward with Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough all keeping tabs on him. The Baggies also have Norwich pair Russell Martin and Wes Hoolahan on trial at present.

Darren Moore will have his eyes set on taking the three points from this match to ensure his side remain in touching distance of the play-off spots and to also lay down a marker in this Friday night game.
