Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich

It’s the big one in Germany this weekend: Der Klassiker, between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Given the top billing of the Saturday evening slot, this has the potential to be a season-definer and Borussia Dortmund could go seven points clear of Bayern with a win.

On Tuesday evening, Lucien Favre suffered his first defeat as Borussia Dortmund manager, as Atletico Madrid won out 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano, getting something of revenge for the 4-0 humilation they suffered at the Signal Iduna Park a fortnight ago. Nevertheless, Favre has done an immensively impressive job so far, winning the vast majority of matches to keep them fighting on all three fronts.

They’ve been especially in good in front of the famous yellow wall so far this season, unbeaten at home and winning seven out of eight in all competitions. They’re top scorers in the Bundesliga with 30 goals, with only Manchester City, Barcelona and PSG scoring more. Bet365 and PaddyPower are offering odds of 21/10 and considered by all bookmakers to be the underdogs in this tie, which could potentially underestimate the importance of recent form.

They’re already generously long odds, but they can be extended to a huge 21/5 with Ladbrokes for Dortmund to win with both teams scoring. Given that Dortmund haven’t kept loads of clean sheets and have won many games by virtue of outscoring their opponents (Augsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig already this season), it should be considered, especially considering the quality and firepower of Bayern on their day.

18-year-old English wonderkid Jadon Sancho has earned headlines as European football’s assist king so far this season, but he’s also handy for a goal or two. He’s got four in his last seven appearances, has been touted to start here, and has odds of 16/5 to score anytime with Betway. It may be worth waiting to see the teamsheet, with Favre prone to rotate and tinker.

Bayern Munich have improved somewhat of late, winning five of their last six in all competitions, gaining ground at the top of the Bundesliga and exerting their status as a superclub in the Champions League, likely to qualify from the group in first place.

But they were frustrated, flat and unconvincing as they were held at home by midtable Freiburg last weekend, not breaking the deadlock until the 80th minute before being pegged back in the 89th. The result took the gap back to four points behind leaders Dortmund, which could become seven points should they lose here – potentially terminal for Nico Kovac’s employment there.

Striker Robert Lewandowski hadn’t looked his unstoppable self for the first few weeks of the season and was symptomatic of the club’s wider malaise, but he’s looked more like himself in recent times, with five goals in his last six games and a brace in the Champions League against AEK Athens in midweek. That’s bad news, especially as he has a habit of scoring against his former club. He’s the favourite of any player on the pitch to score, and can be backed at 10/11 with Unibet.
