Brazil v Costa Rica (Group E) – 22/06/18

Brazil

Undoubtedly the strongest team in Group E, tournament favourites Brazil haven’t got off to the best of starts at this years World Cup. Tite’s men drew 1-1 with Switzerland last Sunday and now sit second in the group heading into this match-up with rock bottom Costa Rica. Philippe Coutinho’s trademark curling effort from outside the area on the 20th minute looked as though it would have kick started a rampant performance from the South Americans. Instead they allowed the Swiss a route back into the game when winger Steven Zuber headed home from a corner just five minutes after the interval. Despite a barrage of attempts from the Brazilians after that equaliser, there were to be no more goals at the Rostov Arena and the match ended level, leaving the group completely open with every team still in with a fair chance of qualifying for the knockout stages in a weeks time.

Neymar was an injury doubt for this game after limping off in training earlier in the week, but it’s now reported that the PSG star will line-up against the Central Americans as he hopes to score his first goal of the tournament. The 26-year-old was fouled a record 10 times against Switzerland – more than any other player in the last 20 years of the World Cup – but won’t let that bother him as he attempts to catch the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Denis Cheryshev & Diego Costa in the race for the Golden Boot. Philippe Coutinho will line-up just behind Neymar in that creative midfield position, while Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus will start up top in that lone striker role. With this in mind, it’s incredibly hard to look past a Brazil win here, backing ‘The Canaries’ to win with a -1 handicap would be our shout on this one!

Costa Rica

Costa Rica are the only team in Group E who are yet to record a single point at the World Cup. Óscar Ramírez’ side kicked off their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Serbia on Sunday afternoon but in truth offered barely anything in the way of harming their opponents when they had possession. A defeat here for Costa Rica will completely end their chances of qualification, so it’s all or nothing for the Central Americans in their quest of making it through to the elusive Round of 16. The form book doesn’t make for good reading if you’re a Costa Rica fan, they’ve won just two of their previous eleven matches in all competitions ahead of this extremely challenging fixture with Brazil, making them firm underdogs in this clash. With Joel Campbell, Bryan Oviedo and Bryan Ruiz the only recognised players in an otherwise inexperienced line-up, Costa Rica’s chances here look incredibly slim against the South American powerhouses. With this in mind, we can’t see anything but a heavy victory for Brazil here.
