Burnley vs Istanbul Basaksehir

Burnley will hope to be more prolific in front of the goal when they host Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir in the second leg of their Europa League Qualifier on Thursday.

The Clarets failed to register a shot on goal in a boring goalless draw in the first leg in Turkey. That result was followed by another goalless draw with Southampton on the opening day of the domestic season. Burnley have been their characteristic-self at the back in the opening weeks of the season, but their recent failures in front of the goal are a cause of concern for Sean Dyche.

Burnley’s failure to find an away goal in the first leg has posed an additional challenge for the English side. Going into the second leg, the Clarets will be well aware that it is a must-win game for them if they hope to progress to the play-off round.

The Premier League side are rather inexperienced at this level, but they are favourites to win the two-legged qualifier. In the last round, Burnley had to battle into extra-time to seal a 4-2 aggregate win over Scottish side Aberdeen and may well be forced to do so again here. The game was decided in extra-time at Turf Moor after both sides couldn’t be separated in 180 minutes of football. It was too close for comfort for the Clarets, and Dyche would hope for a rather simpler and straight-forward progression in the home leg against Basaksehir.

However, it won’t be such an easy task against a side which boasts of names like Emmanuel Adebayor, Gael Clichy, Eljero Elia and Gokhan Inler. The Turkish club have further strengthened their side by signing Arda Turan from Barcelona in the summer.

Istanbul Basaksehir have seen a meteoric rise in their stature in Turkey over the last four seasons. They have been a regular in the top-four over recent campaigns, putting forth a strong title challenge last term and they are one of the favourites for the league title this year. The Istanbul side made their debut in European football last season with an appearance in the Europa League. They were granted a place in the Europa League main draw after they had lost 4-3 to Sevilla on aggregate in Champions League play-offs. However, the competition was not given priority by boss Abdullah Avci as he fielded second-string sides in the group stage. The Turkey club bowed out in the group stage despite picking up eight points from their six games.

Basaksehir started the domestic season with an impressive 2-0 win over Trabzonspor this weekend. Adebayor was a second-half substitute, but he managed to get on the score sheet with an injury-time goal. The Togolese striker has plenty of experience of playing in English conditions, and he could be a key player for the visitors.

On the team front, the hosts have been handed a huge boost as they have striker Chris Wood available for selection. The New Zealand striker missed the first leg due to an infection, but he was in the starting eleven against away to Saints at the weekend.. Ben Gibson, who has arrived in a club record £15m deal, has been a spectator on the bench for past two games, but he centre-back is in the running to make his debut.

Joe Hart has looked impressive in his first two games for the Clarets, and will retain his place in goal after back-to-back clean sheets. For Istanbul Basaksehir, Arda Turan is not included in the squad, but Adebayor should start after missing out the first leg. Avci might also decide to rest some key players for this fixture.
