Burnley vs Newcastle United

This weekend will see the return of the Premier League and on Monday night the televised football returns to our screens as Burnley take on Newcastle at Turf Moor. The tie is a big game for both teams and three points will be the minimum requirement from both managers – with both sides likely to be nearer the bottom three after the rest of the teams from the bottom half go to battle on both Saturday and Sunday. The sides last met back in January at St James’ Park and the match ended in a 1-1 draw, whilst the corresponding fixture back in October of last season ended with a 1-0 win for the hosts. Fans tuning in on Monday evening will be hoping for a similar game to the one in the North-East back in early-2015 which ended in an epic six-goal thriller, but both sides will be focussed purely on the task in hand.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley make their long awaited return to Turf Moor this week for the first time this month – but their return back to their beloved ground isn’t how they’d have hoped to be returning – with the Clarets without a win in five Premier League matches. Recent losses away to West Ham, Man City and more recently an uninspiring 0-0 draw with Leicester at the King Power, means their game against Newcastle – the side one place above them in the top-flight – is huge. A win for Burnley here is a big price of 19/10 with Bet365, whilst the draw is 11/5 with the same bookmaker. Recent meetings against the Magpies have seen Monday’s hosts do very well and surprisingly, Burnley have actually never lost to their opponent – which will give them major confidence heading into the match, but after scoring just two goals in their last four matches, we think under 2.5 goals is a good bet here at 4/7 with Betfair.

Burnley’s best chance of ending a poor run of games without consistently finding the back of the net comes in the form of Chris Wood here. The former Leeds United striker threatened the Leicester goal throughout the 90 minutes last time out – taking three shots – and will be 5/1 to score first here with Bet365. Ashley Barnes has two goals this term and will be hoping to regain some form with a goal and the 29-year-old Englishman is an attractive 11/2 with Sky Bet to net first here. Other goal-threats include Matej Vydra and Sam Vokes – and both men to score in this one is priced at 17/2 – also with Sky Bet.

Newcastle were in horrendous form after ten games in their second season back in the top-flight, but back-to-back wins over Watford and AFC Bournemouth has manager Rafa Benitez now believing his side can make progress – despite the suggestion that their owner Mike Ashley isn’t giving the club the financial backing it warrants and needs. They head into their clash against Burnley as 7/4 outsiders with Bet365 on Monday, but the Magpies will have to forget the woes of the five previous meetings against Burnley in order to perform like they have in recent matches. The positives from recent matches in the Premier League have been Newcastle’s defensive unity and Benitez’s side have actually conceded just two goals in their last four. A clean sheet here for the visitors is 7/4 with Sky Bet, whilst the win to nil is 10/3, also with Sky Bet.

Benitez has certainly shown signs of frustration aimed towards Newcastle’s lack of quality over the last few months and the travelling faithful on Monday night will certainly believe the Spaniard has every right to be after somewhat of a deflating summer on the transfer front. However, one player who has looked really threatening recently has been summer arrival Salomon Rondon. The on-loan Venezuelan bagged a brace against Bournemouth and is 11/2 to score first with Sky Bet. Ayoze Perez grabbed the winner against Watford three weeks ago and the Spaniard is also a nice price of 7/1 to score first and 13/5 to score anytime – both with Bet365.
