Burnley vs West Ham United

Sean Dyche’s Burnley do battle with Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham on Sunday afternoon at Turf Moor. The visitors currently sit in the top half of the table with 27 points, while the hosts are placed in the relegation zone and have just 12 points on the board making this a hugely important fixture for The Clarets.

Burnley fans will be disappointed with the season their side has had thus far, winning just three of their nineteen games and losing thirteen. They have the second-worst defensive record in the league, conceding 41 goals and have netted just 17 themselves. Burnley are on a terrible run of form coming into this game, winning once in their past twelve matches, with their sole victory versus Brighton at home being the only points they have picked up in December. Since the beginning of the month they have scored four goals in five games and shipped fourteen although it cannot be ignored that they have had a difficult fixture list to contend with in recent weeks having played Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton and losing in each. Three points in this game could prove imperative to Burnley’s survival in the Premier League but Dyche will be aware that it will be a big test for his side.

Johann Gudmundsson has been one of the few stand-out performers for Burnley this season with four assists and two goals, meaning that he has been involved in nearly half of his side’s goals. The fact that James Tarkowski, their centre-back, has the same amount of goals as the two main front men Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes speaks volumes about Burnley’s difficulty with finishing chances. There will need to be a massive improvement if Burnley are to keep their heads above water during this campaign and names like Aaron Lennon, Chris Wood and Jeff Hendrick will need to show their true qualities in the games to come. It should come as no surprise that SkyBet have Burnley as the underdogs in their game at the weekend at 12/5, however it may be worth a punt as the home side should be determined to earn the win.

West Ham United are in a much more comfortable position than their opponents for the weekend as they sit in mid-table, five points from the top six. Despite a slow start to the campaign in which they were defeated in all four of their opening games, Pellegrini’s men have turned it around and are now enjoying an excellent vein of form, losing once in six matches with that defeat coming at home to Watford. December has been a fantastic month for The Hammers with wins over Newcastle, Cardiff, Crystal Palace, Fulham and most recently versus Southampton, scoring thirteen times and conceding only four goals. Their supporters can be hopeful of an enjoyable second half of the season if their side can continue to put in these displays each week although they will need to ensure that injuries are kept to a minimum due to their extensive list of players that are not fit.

Felipe Anderson has been sensational at times for West Ham, scoring eight and providing twice. Bet365 have him at 9/4 to score anytime. His finest performance arguably came in the reverse fixture against Burnley where he scored two goals as his team won 4-2 on the day. In their most recent game away to Southampton, Anderson had a quiet match until the second half where he came to life and netted both the equaliser and the winner. Marko Arnautovic and Robert Snodgrass have also impressed with their goal involvements up to now with twelve shared between each other. Arnautovic, Zabaleta, Javier Hernandez and Fabian Balbuena may be available for selection following their respective injuries.
