Celtic vs RB Leipzig

Celtic’s chances of reaching the Europa League knockout stages could be dealt a crucial blow as they host RB Leipzig on Thursday evening.

They’re only three points behind the German club, who are in second place, but a loss would double that gap to six, with just two games left to play. The head-to-head rule means they could no longer catch Leipzig, while they would have to overturn the 3-1 suffered against Salzburg and hope other results went their way. Almost certainly, a loss would leave them out of the competition, while a draw would leave it out of their hands too.

Encouragingly for Brendan Rodgers however, Celtic have enjoyed very good performances in results in recent weeks domestically, with just the disappointing European losses providing disappointing punctuation on an otherwise good run. In Scottish football, Celtic have now won seven straight games with an aggregate score of 25-2, keeping six clean sheets in the process. The weekend’s 5-0 win over league leaders was arguably the best result and performance of the season so far.

Admittedly, RB Leipzig represent a better quality of opposition than anyone Celtic face in Scotland, but at Celtic Park, where they have just lost one game in 2018, they should put in a better performance than they managed away in Leipzig, especially with the return of key man Tom Rogic who missed the trip to Germany two weeks ago.

A Celtic win can be backed at 14/5 with BetVictor and Coral, which are long considering Celtic’s recent form and impressive home record. If you’re looking to extend that, odds of 13/2 with Bet365 for Celtic to win and both teams not to score, which is worth considering given they’ve kept a clean sheet in six of their last seven wins.

Frenchman Odsonne Edouard is in particularly good form, and the youngster is filling the boots of his compatriot Moussa Dembele, who left for Lyon at the end of the summer transfer window. He’s scored seven goals in his last seven games for Celtic, including a brace against Hearts at the weekend. Odds of 21/10 are available through Ladbrokes and Coral for him to score anytime, and BetVictor price him at 7/1 to break the deadlock.

RB Leipzig endured a shaky start to the season under sporting director turned head coach Ralf Rangnick, but are enjoying a good run of form in recent weeks. They’re unbeaten in their last ten matches – including seven wins – and have kept six consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.

Willi Orban and emerging French talent Dayotchanculle Upamecano are forming a fantastic partnership in the centre of defence at Leipzig, and given their ability to shut out defences, it’s worth backing a low-scoring match. Under 2.5 goals is available at 11/10 through BetVictor, which is worth considering given that Leipzig’s 3-0 win over Hertha Berlin on the weekend was their first match in five to feature more than two goals.

Timo Werner has scored a brace in each of his last two outings for Leipzig,  and can be backed at 24/5 with William Hill to score two or more goals. The young German looks full of confidence at the moment, and is Leipzig’s top scorer once again with six league goals so far this season.
