Championship Play-Off Betting Preview 14/05/18 – 15/05/18

Fulham v Derby County

Derby hold the upper-hand going into this evening’s Championship second leg play-off at Craven Cottage. The Rams beat Fulham 1-0 in the first leg on Friday night thanks to a fantastic Cameron Jerome header 10 minutes before half-time, but will know they face a huge challenge here to protect that slender lead in tonight’s clash away from home. Fulham’s home record this season has been impressive to say the least; the Cottagers have only lost two league games on home soil all season, with their last defeat at Craven Cottage coming all the way back at the end of October. Slaviša Jokanović’s men dominated the possession stats in the first leg of this enthralling clash last Friday, but couldn’t penetrate Derby’s well-drilled back line. They’ll know an early goal in this fixture is vital for their chances of making the final at the end of this month, and with players such as Ryan Sessegnon and Aleksandar Mitrovic in their team it’s more than likely they’ll be able to turn around the deficit tonight.

Derby shocked everyone by winning the first-leg last week, but know the job is only half done and that anything but a perfect performance this evening could see their hopes of promotion completely decimated. Gary Rowett’s men still go into this match as underdogs even with a one goal advantage, and it’s clear to see why. The Rams’ away form has been shocking this year; they’ve only won two of their ten league games on the road throughout 2018, with their final three away games of the campaign ending in two defeats and a draw. Fulham’s home form is unbelievably solid, however one thing that will be playing on their minds is the fact they have never won a play-off game. Derby by contrast are experienced pro’s went it comes to this sort of fixture – they’ve been in the play-offs on four separate occasions over the last 20 years so know exactly what is required of them in order to succeed. Will they use this experience to hold onto their slender lead and make it into that elusive final tonight though?

Aston Villa v Middlesbrough

Just like Derby, Aston Villa go into the second-leg of their play-off encounter with a 1-0 lead thanks to a well taken header from Mile Jedinak at the Riverside. Villa now take some good momentum into this second-leg clash with Boro, but can’t afford to rest on their laurels considering how ruthless their opponents can be going forward. The hosts will feel more than confident in their ability to protect their lead here though, they’ve been strong at home this season, losing just one of their previous fifteen games at Villa Park. Steve Bruces’ men aren’t ones to concede all too frequently on home soil; they’ve let in just one goal in their last four home games, and now they have a lead to protect will be lining up extremely defensively to ensure they don’t jeopardise their chances of making the final in two weeks time. We’re predicting a very tight-knit affair in this one, so backing under 2.5 goals would be our suggestion here.

Middlesbrough have it all to do here as they look to turn around the one goal deficit they suffered on Saturday evening. Tony Pulis’ men head into this game as firm underdogs considering their form away from home at the end of the campaign, but in the lottery of the play-offs anything can happen and this match should be a very interesting affair. Both sides have some strong attacking prowess, however Middlesbrough dynamic attack that consists of Britt Assombalonga, Patrick Bamford and Adama Traore will definitely cause problems in this encounter at Villa Park. With just one win in their last five away from home, the visitors will have to pull something special out of the bag to make it past Villa in this one – who’s your money on?
